High beam switch

When I switch from high to low or low to high the lights go OUT, then if I slightly pull the switch back they come back on. Is this a dust thing, can I, should I spray some electrical cleaner in the switch area of the column. Or is this switch on it's way out.
Thanx

Re:High beam switch

I posted this same thing for my 99 about a month ago and a few people said that the light switch was a recall item, but I couldn't find it in any recall list. But I also don't believe that its the switch. I'm leaning toward a relay somewhere between the brights and the foglamps, because when I hit the switch for the brights the foglamps are supposed to turn off but don't, just the headlights turn off. Let me know if you find an outcome I'm tired of no brights.

Re:High beam switch

My 99 had that problem and it was the light switch. If I remember the truck was only about 6 months old when it happened. The dealer that replaced the switch said that they have seen a lot of the 99s coming in with bad headlight switches. I bet it was cheaper for them to replace switches as they went bad, rather then recall a whole bunch of trucks. :-X

Mine does the same thing and the head light switch has been replaced once already. I too am thinking relay somewhere.

Re:High beam switch

I had the same problem with my 2000 and it was the dimmer switch. I think the dealer calls it a multifunction switch. When I took the switch off, you could see burnt spots on the board where it switches contacts. The switch is easy to remove, so you could take it off and see if it has burnt spots like mine did. If you need one, the dealer was the only place I could find one and I think it was around $60.

Re:High beam switch

I too had the same problem with the lights going out (isn't that fun!). Changed out the multi function switch and all is well. Took about 20 minutes and special torx screwdrivers with the hole drilled in the center.

Don M.
97 CTD, #6 plate, Scotty II, 3k gov springs, 16k Reese hitch
2001 Tahoe 33TB Toy Hauler for the race car

Re:High beam switch

Hey Wade, wondering if you ever found a fix for this one. I haven't had brights in some months now. I can't even get a straight answer on the length of warranty for this headlight switch. I'm just geeting ready to roll 100,000 so I'm startin to get interested in anything still on the stealers service plan.

Re:High beam switch

99, I'm pretty sure that your headlight switch is way out of warranty. I burned out two switches. The first time the dealer replaced it. The second time he realized that I have two sets of fog lamps running off the switch. After I paid for the second switch replacement ($86.00 with labor) I had my second set of fogs put on a relay. No more problems.

Re:High beam switch

Mine started doing this same thing Christmas Eve. Went to dim the highbeams on a very steep ice covered corner, as I met an oncoming car and instead of low beams, I had NO beams

I guess I will be checking out the multifunction switch.

Re:High beam switch

My lows are working fine, the highs go out just as they come on when going from low to high. I got to blink the switch about 35 times to get the highs to stay on.
