This is on my '98 2500. I sold my '99 1500 to buy this '98 2500 in February. The first thing I noticed when driving it at night was the low bean headlights didn't seem as bright as on my 1500, but the high beams were much better. I assumed it was either simple headlight aim or better bulbs. Don't know if any of that really matters.

But...

About half the time when I am driving at night, at least once when I switch the lights from high beam for on-coming traffic the headlights go completely off. In a mild panic (because a car is coming and I can't see anything) I quickly click the lever back again and the high beams come back on, then I click it again and it goes to low beam like it should.

I've never noticed if the dash lights or park lights go out with the headlights, I'm rushing to get my headlights back on. I've seen no particular pattern of when it does this compared to how long the lights or high beams have been on. Some times it's right away, some times it's not.

So what the the on-coming traffic sees from me is "high beam - no lights - high beam - low beam"

Is this the hi/lo switch or something else?

 

Kinda sounds to me like it is the multi-function switch.

Mine did the same thing. It was the multi function switch as MnTom said.

mine did the same thing. Multi-Function switch. It started to smell like something electrical burning. It was part of the switch burning up. Changed it out that day.

This happened to me in the dark during the rain!!!! it was scary.
