Got a Tranny LEak

I had to add tranny fluid this morning. Found out why. I now have a Cat III leak from one of the hardlines crossing under the tranny. Two have chaffed together.

Can I splice in some quality rubber lines with good clamps??? or do I have to replace the hard line with new?

I'm thinking that splicing with soft will be fine, but thought I'd check with the brain trust.

Thanks,

Ed

Splicing in some rubber line will be fine.
I have run trans coolers off the hard lines for years and never had a problem.
Just make sure that it is the correct size line and clamps. You should be fine.

I've been told that trani fluid will eventually eat the rubber. Make sure you get trani fluid proof type rubber line. There is a diferance. Ask the part's guy's.

On the other hand, the new factory line's aren't that expensive.

Depends on your definition of expensive is. I think they are very overpriced. When I put my Suncoast tranny in, I replaced all the factory lines with a braided hydraulic hose with JIC fittings. Working like a charm and will be much harder to chaff through. But if it does I can just make a new one with the spare line I have.

Well they must be cheaper for the new ones. I checked on the ones for my 99 and it was going to be over $300 for all the lines.

Well,,,my bad. I didn't notice that he was talking about a 98. So that's a whole differant animal. My line was just a short run. Guess that's why it was cheap.

I was talking to a guy who took his truck to the dealer for new tranny lines.

anyway, the bill for parts and labor....

Fluid
This fee
That fee
Hazardous waste disposal fee (gotta love this one!)

You can temporarily splice in some rubber hose, I use the red multipurpose NAPA stuff for my tranny cooler. It holds up just fine. You'll need some 1/2" ID hose. If you have a double flaring tool I would use that to make sure the hose doesn't blow off because you won't notice it until you are out of fluid! When/if you do put new lines on make sure and wrap some hose around the rub points. Good Luck

Thanks for he input guys. I have temporarily brazed the leak shut and have new hydralic lines being made. So far, no leaks.

By the way, the dealer parts guy just laughed and said "spend your money on something else."

Thanks again.
