I have owned a 2001 CDT Auto for 5 days now.

I decided to change the oil, oil filter and fuel filter today.

The oil change went fine no problems there.


My question is on the fuel filter.

Is this the way you change it?


Take the cap off
Take the old filter out
Drain the bowl
Fill it with diesel
Put the new filter inside the lid
Put the fuel filter with lid in the can.
Then hit the starter without starting it? how many times?

is this the correct way to change the fuel filter?

 

Pretty much.

You might want to drain the bowl first, that way you aren't taking out a dripping wet filter.
Most of the time 1 bump of the starter is enough, but I'd do two just for grins.

what is the valve at the back at the top for?

am i suppose to take that cap off the back when I bump the starter?

crap now the truck wont start

 

when people talk about looseing a injector are they talking about what I have circled in red?

 

Pop the top off the filter cannister and make sure there is fuel in there.

If there isn't, that means your lift pump has gone TU (died).

If there is, put the top back on and get a helper to push the valve stem on the schraeder valve on the VP44, it has a black screw on cap just like your tire valve stems, while you bump the starter.

Verify there is good fuel flow coming out of that, if so try cranking with the pedal mashed to the floor.

If this doesn't get it started, you'll have to loosen the injector lines at couple injectors, crank the engine until there is no air bubbles coming out, then tighten them back up.
Make sure to keep body parts away while cranking, the fuel is extremely high pressure, high enough to penetrate flesh.

Crank some more and it should start, run rough but then smooth out.

after you bump the starter be sure to leave the key on for like 30 sec. the pump should run and fill the filter. try this a couple times and then see if it starts. make sure the drain is off/ closed and the cap is thight//no leaks.

 

Yes, I believe so.
I've never personally had to loosen one though.

I've changed my filter 6 times now, and managed to get it started each time, eventually on a couple of them.

putting the pedal to the floor and pumping it while starting did the trick.
It just takes a while. Now I need a fuel pressure gauge
