First Fuel filter change ??

This will sound dumb but what is that round yellow rubber piece for, in the bag with the filter

Is that something that goes around the seal when I put the lid back on?

Im looking to tackle this task today and when I pulled the filter out of my Genos box of goodies I noticed this yellow thing that looks like a gasket in there?

There should only be the filter and a replacement o-ring in the box.....so, I am not sure what the yellow thing is!

Is it the same size as the o-ring on your cap now? Did the box contain a black colored o-ring as well? I've seen yellow o-rings before, they were for hydraulic connections on Caterpillar equipment.

got it from genos and it didnt come in a box. just shrinked wrapped plastic along with a yellow rubber band looking thing inside. It must be the O ring. Part is a fleetguard FS19855
genos says this but no mention of the o ring changing to yellow

Additional Note: During the Summer of 2006, Fleetguard ceased production of the FS19579 Fuel Filter used on the 2000 - 2007 Dodge/Cummins Turbo Diesel. That filter was replaced by the "user friendly" FS19579E. The Stratapore filtration media was not changed. However, the plastic end caps were changed to a more environmentally-friendly material. And, the end caps were made thinner to facilitate installation into and removal from the filter cap. Also, the packaging was changed, and the FS19579E was no longer shipped in individual white Fleetguard boxes.
The odd thing is that the one I got is actually a 19579E and not what they list. I just need to make sure its the o ring before I go pulling out the old one. I'll try to take a picture later and post it

Don't throw your old one away if you decide to use the new one. I've never seen a yellow o ring. I have never ordered a filter through Geno's though.

If it was inside the shrink wrap, it probably came from the factory that way. I know on mine, the o ring is not that hard to get off without tearing it. If the new one matches up, oil it and use it. If you're not comfortable with that, oil the old one and reuse it.

I was trying to find something on Fleetguards web site and I ran across this.
Click It will open a window and download a PDF file. Very interesting. Also as you can see here the fuel filter in question is listed as using the new material. Can't find out anything on the yellow o-ring though.

OK, I have not seen these new filters yet.

Dont worry about your o ring - you can resuse the old one if you need to.

Here is the procedure for changing the fuel filter:

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/fil...uel_filter.htm

If you are new to these machines, there is a LOt fo good info here for you:

http://www.dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm

Now, be advised, if your lift pump is not working or not working well, you might NOT get the truck started after changing the fuel filter. So, plan accordingly. (of course, I am assuming that you dont have a fuel pressure guage)

thanks, well Im not all that new to these machines but just never changed my own fuel filters. If the yellow ones is the same size and thickness as the one thats already there then I'll go ahead and use it. If not I'll keep the old one on there.

well it is apparently the O-ring but the old one looked perfectly fine so I just wiped it off and left it on there. I figured there is no sense of taking it off if its ok. And now I have a spare one in case I ever mess one up

pretty easy. Job cost me $11.95 and took maybe 15 minutes at the most. It took me longer to gather the ratchet, filter, step stool, and socket than it does to change it! Cant believe I used to pay some place $50

Remember to oil the o-ring when you replace it or change the filter, it will make it easier to get the lid off next time.
