"check gages" light on

My husband drives an '01 2500 diesel. Today on the highway the check gages light came on and the voltage dropped to the eight.....but the truck continued to run fine. We made it into town and even drove with the lights on. Any suggestions on what this could be? Hopefully nothing serious.
Thanks!

as you will prolly learn this morning, the charging system is down. on that year truck you can cycle the key on/off/on 3 times and it will shoot you the codes in the odometer window, but 8v and check guages is going to be pretty striaght forward

If the other items that the guys mentioned above doesn't work check and see if you have a loose battery cable, this is what the problem with mine was, also make sure your batteries are in good shape

Thanks for the replies.
He hasnt changed the oil & oil filter recently.
He cleaned the connections on the battery and checked the cables. He will be taking it and having the batteries checked this morning.
The Tach didn't do anything unusual that I noticed. I was the one driving when it happened.
I really hope it is just the batteries, or maybe it needs new cables.....I will post and let you know what he finds out about the batteries,
Thanks guys.
