Changed fuel filter truck won't start

Guys and gals I need some advice. I just cahnged the fuel water seperator filter on my 01' It now has 53,000 miles on it. Now the truck will not start. After i put the new filter in it started momentarily and stalled. I filled the the filter bowl with fuel and tryed again no dice. Please tell me there is a simple fix to my problem. I don't have time to deal with the steal-er-ship I need the truck for work and am going away with it this weekend.<br><br>Thanks in advance

Heckuvaway to start your first post dude.

Turn the key to the on position, then &quot;bump&quot; the starter.
You don't want to try to start the truck, just momentarily engage the starter to activate the lift pump.
You should hear the lift pump buzz for about 30 seconds.
Repeat this 4 times waiting for the lift pump to stop running each time before trying again.
Then crank the engine over, it might take up to 30 seconds or so of cranking.
If still no start, wait 1 minute for the starter to cool down and try again.
If it still doesn't start after 3 trys, let us know and we'll go through the more involved injector bleeding procedure.

Re:Changed fuel filter truck won't start

that was a quick response ;D Thank you very much. 5 min after I posted a mechanic buddy called me. I had to bleed the injectors. Last time I changed the filter it just started right up. That's why I was in a frenzy. I realized last time I did it the truck was facing down hill, this time it was up hill maybe just the way I had it parked caused it to get air bound.<br><br>Thanks again Shovelhead.<br><br>Next time I post I hopefully won't be troubled. I'll be lurking.

Glad to be of help. ;D

Believe me, we'll see &quot;Changed fuel filter now won't start&quot; threads for awhile now that the weather's warming up and people are starting their summer maintenance.

FYI- sometimes that means you have a bad lift pump or injector pump- for those of you w/o a fp gauge.

Re:Changed fuel filter truck won't start

If you hook up and a/c charge line at the vp44 test port and leave the other end open and in a jug to catch the fuel (or remove the valve core from the shrader and slip a drain hose on ) then do the bump and run the lift pump until you get clear fuel out of the hose. Starts up and never misses a beat. ;D I have the Briar Hopper test gauge, and just remove the gauge and use the hose to drain. 8)<br>just my $ 0.00002<br>HTH

Re:Changed fuel filter truck won't start

Hey guys, I am having a similar yet different problem (I think). I replaced my fuel filter and now all I get is a sizzling/spitting sound from near or at the fuel filter. I don'<br>t even get the normal fuel pump prime noise.<br><br>I tried removing the new O ring and using the old one with no luck. I tried different amounts of torque on the cap from snug with the fingers (later as a trouble shooting step) to snug with a 1/2 ratchet.

Do you have a filter cap with a square hole?<br>Did you use a the 1/2 inch rachet without a socket?<br><br>If so you may have cracked the cap. I think there was a TSB on this.

Re:Changed fuel filter truck won't start

I used the 1-1/8 inch socket and I just got it snug. I took the cap off and inspected it and it looked ok. Any idea why I wouldn't hear the lifter pump (as I read I'm trying to use the correct terminology)?

dominojd said that he had to bleed his injectors, how do you do that?

Re:Changed fuel filter truck won't start

If you don't hear the lift pump, you may want to check that out first. After that, you will need some help to bleed the line.<br>1: Crack open the fuel line at the injector.<br>2: Have someone turn the engine over ( for no more than 30 sec. at a time ) while you watch for 'clean' fuel, no air bubbles.<br>3: Close / tighten that line, and move on to the next one.<br>4: After the 4th cylinder, it MAY want to start. If it does, tighten the open line, and raise the engine RPM to 1000-1200 for 20-30 seconds.<br>5: Enjoy the ride

kfluret<br>did you pull the cap off the filter housing after you cycled the key on and off to see if it had filled up again with fuel thats what the book says to do when changing the filter.

Re:Changed fuel filter truck won't start

It turned out to be the lift pump. I could hear it running, but no fluid moving. After draining the fuel filter canister and then turning it over for a few seconds, no new fuel in the canister. I replaced the lift pump and and had to bump the engine twice before I could hear that fule was being pumped. I waited until I could get fuel out of the Banjo on the injector pump. A few cranks (with my foot on the gas) turned her over. Once more and I was off and running. Thanks for all the help guys.
