Re:changed fuel filter and won't start

Do you push the pedal down when you try and start it? Also, did you fill the fuel canister when you replaced it? I know these questions sound kind of corny, but mine didn't start for a while either, and as soon as I held the fuel pedal down on started, she came right to life after a couple sputters.

Is it possible 'purple's lift pump has gone bad and he was running on the injection pump alone?

Oh, sure, now he leaves us wondering who his dad is. Is he a DTR member? ??? ??? Maybe he should be so he can help keep his son straightened out . I speak for all goofy dads. Stand up and unite, wait, that's another cause. Just too many causes nowadays. How about cracking the #1 injector line to bleed air? How about venting at the base of the fuel filter via the water drain until you get some fuel flow? Someone mentioned this little trick awhile back. Would need two people unless you're really quick. Don't take what I say as gospel, trying to assimilate all this information available gets confusing sometimes.

Re:changed fuel filter and won't start

OK, so it was running fine until you changed the fuel filter, right? So, it sounds like your injector pump is fine. If the injection pump is "out", it ain't gonna run. Why do you want to swap it out? As far as the lift pump, if it's bad, I'd get a replacement from a Cummins shop. I understand there's a hefty mark-up to get the identical pump from Dodge. Check Cummins' web site for a location nearest you. Let us know how you make out.

Re:changed fuel filter and won't start

This is goofy dad. I usualy leave all this high tech stuff to the yungins, but I feel violated. The truck was having problems with power prior to changing this filter. with a trailer behind it 65mph was to the floor. after the filter change it wouldn't prime itself, so i ended up putting a bleeder vac on a fuel line coming out of the injector pump and that seems to have done the trick. the injector pump is fine it is the lift pump that I think is bad, but I am far from being a mechanic. I'm one of those self proclaimed tinkerers. I have been pondering the idea of that fuel supply kit from wildcat diesel anyway this just speeds things up a little.

Re:changed fuel filter and won't start

Welcome to the site Goofy Dad,,,, 99 Cummins, ;D
It sounds like you have the classic "bad lift pump syndrome". On the 99, you can check the fuel pressure using the test ports on the top of the filter housing. By removing the 1/8"npt plug closest to the center (post-filter) and installing a test gauge, you will be able to read the fuel pressure between the filter and the injection pump. The other test port is pre-filter and measures pressure between the lift pump and the filter. Pressure readings should be at least 10-12psi @ idle.
Hope this helps.

BTW,,,,, it is OK to send Goofy Son to the corner now!

Re:changed fuel filter and won't start

Think I had a brain fart, the fuel delivery kit I reffered to was from Smokin Diesel and not Wild Cat, just in case anybody out there has any pros or cons to tell me about this kit. It's hard to turn money loose.

Re:changed fuel filter and won't start

Ya we got it started that time, but we did find out the lift pump was bad. so I did finaly order the high performance pump system from smokin diesel. Now it's dead again!!!
Someday I might learn, but I doubt it. At this moment the front end is up on ramps, the old fuel lines and pump off and the new pump and lines just kind of hangin around under the truck. This wasn't the quick clean job I kept reading about here, but I'm makin headway. right now the biggest problem is the weather. I keep the light close by for a little heat.

PS. After I finish the the new pump and braided fuel lines I also have the comp edge box and pillar guages to figure out. If me and this back stabbin kid of mine make it through this we are for hire.

Re:changed fuel filter and won't start

Many times these trucks will run with a dead lift pump. You can get them running again, with the dead pump, after changing a fuel filter, by putting a line (with a schreder valve on the end) to the test port on the VP44 and the other end into a container of fuel. The engine will fire up and while running you simply remove the line from the VP44. I've seen them run at negative fuel pressures of 5 to 7 lbs through a dead lift pump
