catastrophic failure

Need some help, not sure what happened.

Truck has taken longer to crank a couple of times in the last week, 5 sec. as opposed to 1/2 sec. But the problem has been intermittent.

Drove to McD's tonight, shut off, fired right back up when I left. Drove across a parking lot to subway, shut off, would not start. I bumped it and the fuel pumps were apparently only getting an intermittent signal, they did not stay on like they are supposed to. You could hear the solenoid kicking on and off. I cranked again, it fired right up like normal, revved it a little bit, idled back down and died again. Cranked on it for a while, it fired but sounded and felt like it was only hitting one cylinder. While it was doing this really rough idle, fuel pressure was jumping between 1 - 6 really fast (when it fired normal, fuel was at 12 like always). I shut it down. Tried bumping again, it was erratic. Tried cranking again and all of a sudden its like nothing happened. Fuel press. normal, smooth etc. Headed towards my shop, about half way there it went to the strange one cyl idle again.

I made it to a parking lot, and checked the codes:

0251 - Injection pump valve feedback circuit
0252 - Injection pump valve stuck
1688 - Internal Injection pump controller failure
0602 - ECM fueling calibration error
1693 - Companion code

Darn it, where should I start. The VP has never been starved of fuel. Could those other codes be causing trouble for the VP or is it the other way around. What should I do first to trouble shoot this.

I should also mention that late last week I attempted to change my Smarty level. It erred with a code 14, no idea what that meant or means. However, I started the truck and it ran fine. Meant to figure it out but hadn't gotten around to it yet. I just tried again (was going to go to stock), the smarty reported it had stock software on it already. I tried to load another software, it went through the normal procedure, loaded it 100%, then error code 14 again.

I'll take any suggestions guys. Thanks.

How much fuel in the tank?
The fuel level sending units are notorious for failing and several folks have run out of fuel with a 1/4 tank or more showing on the gauge.
Have you tried removing the power adder?
My Edge Comp (running in EZ Mode) failed and made the engine stumble and cut out so badly I thought I was going to need to call a tow truck to get to work.
Removed the Edge when I got to work, it has run perfectly ever since.
Each of my VP-44s that died (three) have just shut off while running like someone turned off a switch.
Yours might be different.

I'm showing 1/4 tank, but only 400 mi on the OD. Highway miles I usually fill up around 500, but I'll fill it up before I start replacing stuff. I contacted Smarty on the error code, they told me to reset the ECM which I'll try too. Could a messed up ECM be sending strange enough signals to cause the VP to act like it has failed? I seriously have not put any strain on the thing at all, though I'm approaching 145k miles.

Shovelhead, what VP's were you replacing yours with, I think I'll stay away from that brand.

If you search that 1688 code it seems to always point to a bad VP. My buddy just went through it.

Man, that is NOT what I was wanting to hear from you guys, thanks for telling me though.

Is it possible to rebuild a VP yourself? Do they sell kits. I'm a fairly competent mechanic and have access to a machine shop for some simple stuff.

I think 602 is a code the smarty will through the others tell me your VP has retired
my 01 has had p0602 ever since I installed the Catcher.try and un hook your box and see if that helps
I replaced a vp last summer with the p1688 and it fired right back up with the new pump
I was told by Valley fuel injection & turbo that the VP44s have A key stroke life span...only so many starts +- and its dead Electronics zap out

You can't rebuild a Bosch pump without the $10,000 test bench to set it up.

All the pumps are Bosch,.....but rebuilders are not all created equal.
