Why did my nv5600 have catastrophic failure?

On friday my truck will be @ the dealership for 3 weeks. Waiting for a new transmission.

My driving style consisted of always using 1st gear starts, never ever any speed shifting/racing/sled pullin/clutchless gear changes. Upshifted around 2000 rpm's and never lugged the engine.

The only thing I can think that killed my nv5600 is that I drove kinda slow. I drive around 300 km's a day and alot of that is at around 80 km/h. (50 mph.) That puts me @ around 1450 rpm. I know I said I did not lug my engine, but it seems fine running @ those speeds and rpm.

When it crapped out on me I was just driving and shifting like normal. Then when I tried to go into 5th it just started grinding. Never had a hard shift in any gear, even in 5th. So I figure something fell apart in there to go from nice normal shifting it's whole life to grinding every time going into 5th. Every other gear shifted fine even when I dropped it off @ the dealership.

The dealership tells me there is no estimated time of arival for a replacement transmission. 115,000 km's or 70,000 miles...........just around the end of warranty!

Sounds like the low rpm caused oil starvation in the tranny.

I have heard the recommended oil fill is not sufficient for our NV5600's.
I overfill mine by about 1 quart.

Good luck on getting a new NV5600.
Did the dealer say they can get one?

Did the NV's have a problem like the early G56's with low oil...or improper oil on a bearing...one of the two????

Some have said so. But from what I have read here and elsewhere, it usually affects 6th gear lack of oil and happens more so with the heavy towing crowd.
I've yet to read about a 5th going boom like Swamps did with the driving style described. Kind of sounds to me like a fluke thing that just finally let go at 70k.

My brother used to have a 2000 with a 5-speed. But the transmission always got really hot after normal light driving. That's why he never tried to tow heavy with it. I wonder if it was low on oil some of these 6 speeds are?

The way I did it was easy last time because I had to change the clutch so I had the shift tower off and just poured it right in.
You can probably fill through a shift cover bolt though...

To take the shift tower off its only about a 10 minute job.

I overfilled mine through the top PTO cover bolt hole. I'm running 5 qts of Amsoil MTF.

I would like to add more to mine.A top PTO bolt hole sounds like a easy way to do it.did you use a sealer on the bolt or just put it back in?

Yes, I used RTV on the bolt threads before reinstalling.

Not that it contributed to the failure, but why did you use 1st?
Even towing a 18ft trailer with a lifted jeep, I never used 1st...
(With a heavy load, or steep hill, yeah, but normal driving no)

2nd is where its out to start out, and 3rd if I was rolling at all....

To overfill just pull the truck up on a set of ramps under the driver's side tires and fill through the normal hole.
