Why did my nv5600 have catastrophic failure?
I used 1st gear all the time because I read an article in my TDR magazine written by Peter @ Southbend. He gave many suggestions on how to take care of your clutch and 1st gear starts was one of them. As for the overfilling you can use ramps on the drivers side, but when I get my new transmission in I am going to park on a steep sidehill! (Don't have ramps.)
I still think something had to have fallen apart with it just grinding going into 5th with no other indicators. The dealership told me there were metal shavings everywhere and it would be more cost effective for a new tranny then to rebuild. When they told me this I thought cool. Order one up it will be here in a day or 2 and I will be on my way. Tommorow is 3 weeks and counting..........

Never had an ounce of problems starting in 2nd, no shutters, slipping(truck put down 433rwhp)
Hopefully you get it fixed though, as for the dealership finding a nv5600 for you, im sure itll take a while, they arent in a rush either, seems they never are...
Any other dealerships in your area to try a better response from?
I was still driving my nv4500 up until I swapped it out, 250k miles on it, took a core to a local company, had them build it, and swapped it out on a weekend when I had time. I know youd want them to fix it if its under warranty, and since they can do it quickly(once they have a tranny to replace it)
I too have heard the 6 quart fill is the best thing you can do for the NV5600. In fact, my 6th quart just came in today and is sitting on top of my desk as we speak. I'll just take the shifter out and pour it in. To heck with parking on a hill or ramps and crawling under the truck and all that crap. Just take the bolts out and pour it in the top. It is very easy, just takes a few minutes to get all those silly little bolts out.
This is why I will never have a manual trans!!!! Gosh, all of these G56's blowing up, and now the infallable NV5600's too!!!!
I'll stick to my 48RE!!
(sorry, I had to do it since the stick guys allways jump on the broken automatic threads)
carry on . . . .

Ok. I'll ask the dumb question. Why are there no 5600's around? I can understand that the company or whoever quit making them....SOMEONE HAS TO MAKE PARTS to support the trucks that are on the road. Am I missing something? I haven't done a lot of research or searches about this, so sorry if it has already been answered. You can't just jerk a product off the market without a replacement or upgrade or something.

If youre looking to get it rebuilt(and built stronger), and dont mind shipping....
Standard Transmissions in Ft Worth rebuilt my nv4500, fully splined shaft, replaced 3 gears, all syncros, 5th gear nut, etc $1680(picked up)
Great shop, had it done in a week too, usually done quicker, but they can still get/repair new ventures...
The NV5600 ceased production on Jan 31 2005.
Chrysler was their sole customer for this transmission.
In fact it was developed for Chrysler and was manufactured under somewhat of a joint venture. When DCX said no more NVG was sort of hung out to dry on the deal and sold off alot of the machinery that helped manufacture the NV5600.
Another out sourced American job for a cheaper foreign counterpart.
Thanks DCX for giving us the gift of the G-56

Well I did some reading today and found out that the plant closed earlier this year....

There will be thousands of these transmissions out there still under warranty for years to come. I sure hope everyone that has a problem with them will not have 3 week + wait or have to find one themselves! The ONLY reason I am so laid back on this issue is I get to drive my 98 12v for work! Also I guess if they are covering it on warranty I will let them worry about finding the rebuild or bits and pieces needed for now.
With my job, no truck means no money! I drive all over the country checking oil and gas wells, dehy's, compessors etc.
