What what gauge?

And when my grid heater cycles it will sometimes pull the volt gauge down just low enough for the check gauges light to come on.

Well everyone has beat the bushes to death trying to avoid the inevitable.
Put a VP44 on an be done with it. Trying to figure the codes will run you in circles so many times.

this may be another symptom of my problem, I have been starting the truck and letting it run for about 20 minutes at a time so the batts don't die since it has been in the 20's here but i have not driven it for fear of another breakdown and it is too cold out for any manual diagnosing, I am noticing that the truck is smoking out the exhaust and smells like rich exhaust, i never had this before at least not a idle, is this a symptom to my problem or is it just cause it is so dam cold out?

i agree there is a lot of information out there, but the problem is applying it correctly to the issue... this is where the mechanic with his experience and equipment comes in...you cannot beat a correct diagnosis

ok well I drove the truck around today for the first time since the last breakdown and it seems fine but it was in the 50's yesterday and 60's today so i think maybe fuel geling was the problem? when I broke down it was 15* during the day and i don't add antigel so guess i should start

Tom, anything is possible, the new ULSD gells much more quickly than the old stuff. After a good year last year, the MFGs. may be trying to lower the additive levels to reduce costs.

This could see-saw back and forth until they get their collective stuff together, the first year of ULSD was a nightmare for most people in cold weather, we had stuff frozen up all over.

I just automatically dose it double strength with white PS whenever I fill up.
