Blue smoke @ 14,000 feet

When drove up MT Evans, my truck did what i was expecting on the way up. I was getting alot of black smoke and lost power. WHen i started it up to come down my truck poured out blue smoke, this was with very little amout of throttle.

High Altitude does weird things to these engines. When I was going over the Rockies, it felt like I lost 100hp

Have not had my truck up there. Sounds normal. Black smoke is lack of air, that's how I feel when I walk up. You must use less throttle and lower gears.

I live in Colorado and drive in the mountains a lot. At high altitude when descending you are applying much less throttle than going up or cruising. If you start with a cold engine, it will take for ever to warm up and you may get lots of WHITE smoke. If your engine is at operating temp to start with, the combustion chamber temp can still drop below normal if descending long enough. WHITE smoke is usually unburned fuel, BLUE smoke is oil. Hope that's not the case.

diesel fuel is oil......just a lighter grade. It will puff blue smoke if there isnt enough air and your not on the throttle. It goes from white to blue to grey to black.

Mine does the same thing when its cold, they all will the fuel can't burn completely and theres not much air up there anyways. don't worry about it.

Mine does that leaving my house in the morning, I'm at 7,000ft. When I plug it in though it does not happen.
I wonder how well my truck would run at sea level!

I may have to take a road trip to the lowlands to see what I have been missing!
