99 3500 auto tranny

My partners truck has decided to become "unavailable". Here is the problem. First pulls good and strong, shifts into second but will start slipping when any strong throttle is applied. Won't ever shift up to higher but will downshift back to first. Reverse works nomal. I know he is probably looking for a new tranny, but anyone have any ideas first? Thanks for the inputs.
Ed

I agree with Shovelhead. Time to contact one of the "big three". DTT, ATS, or Goerend Bros. Mine is starting to slip more and I personaly will be going to DTT for mine. I have talked to Bill K. and he was very staight forward with answers and didn't give me any bull. I like that.
Tom

Re:99 3500 auto tranny

Guys, thanks for the replies. Forgot to say the fluid looked and smelled good. Level was very near the full mark.
I figured it was worth the shot asking, but we have already started discussing what he wants with his new tranny. BTW, it lasted for 110,000 miles. My 98 is still original at 145,000 so I am just waiting also.
Ed

Re:99 3500 auto tranny

If you don't BOMB the truck, the auto will last a long time with reasonable care. Once you start to make changes...uhoh.
However, IMHO, the auto is no worse than the manual. How many standards are bombed and have the stock clutch without slipping? A high performance clutch is not a lot cheaper than an aftermarket TC, and I am not sure which would last longer.

Just a thought.

Might try adjusting the front band. That's the one that gets applied in 2nd. It's easy to adjust, because the adjustment is on the outside of the trans case on the left side. You loosen the locknut back about three turns, tighten the screw to 72 in lbs. (make sure the locknut is still loose) then back off 1 7/8 turns, hold the screw, and tighten the locknut.

OK, first, thanks to all who helped out. Turned ot it was the rear speed sensor. My partner is now a very happy camper. Total cost to repair including labor, $60. Thanks again.
Ed
