02 Wait to start flashing it's not the IAT

Hello all,

On the way to the fishing hole with the kids this morning the engine started cutting out, on off, on off type of thing. Was getting a flashing wait to start light. checked the connectors all seems good. Ended up getting it towed home.

Everything I've read on the net says this is related to the IAT sensor. I pulled the old one put an ohm meter on it and it was in spec but I put another one anyway and it's not the problem. The WTS light is still blinking and it just cranks.

The only code I have is P1694 (M) No CCD Messages received from ECM. I have no idea what this means.

This is second time the truck has died while trying to go fishing...last time it was 0216.

Any help would be great. I'm going to recheck the wiring...maybe there's a problem there

you probably have a rubbed wire or loose connector look real close at all your wires

I just went through all the harness I could see and there was nothing obvious. Nothing rubbed through and no lose connectors. I've been staring at this thing all day. I'll give it another shot tomorrow. Maybe it will start up in the morning...yeah right!

It would seem that a flashing WTS light is usually due to a blank ECM I'm afraid. You will probably need to get it reflashed...

Yikes!!! Where's a good place to get another? I don't have time to ship it out and back...I can only have this down for a day or two. Got to get to work!!!!

What usually causes this? Doesn't seem too common?

Bad grounds can cause this... not too sure though why it happens. My suggestion would be to get in touch with Bob Wagner. He is the guru when it comes to ECM issues. He can tell you how to proceed I'm sure.
Cummins can usually flash the ECM for you, Dodge otherwise.

ECM got wiped somehow. They are going to reflash and see what happens. I hope whatever caused the failure manifests itself right away so they can fix the root cause. All I need is this to happen again in two weeks. Knowing your vehicle could die at any second really sucks.

Anyone know a good place to get antoher ECM I can carry for back up? How much do these typically cost?

Update. ECM is toast. Cummins wants $2200 Dodge wants $1100. I found another company SOLO that has them for $900 + core.

Flashing WTS = Death of the ECM!!!!

Most I know just shop around ebay for a used one cheap (or the classifieds) to carry around. If it's any consolation to you, it is still a very uncommon problem.
I take it you were not able to reflash it?

Cummins said it would not take a flash and it ran fine on their ECM. I hope this is a fluke and doesn't happen again in a month

BTW 2002's do have more hardware failures than prior years.

Thanks Bob.

So if I pick up an ECU from the dealer can they flash it on the spot and then I can install it myself? Or do they (cummins or dodge) have to install then reflash?

Per FSM it only says you have to set the TPS before starting the engine. It doesn't mention any other procedures
