PTO prep

I'm looking at adding a PTO to my truck and was just wondering who may have done it already. Where did you source the pump and prep kit? Any info would be appreciated.

What do you want to do with it? There are a couple different set up options depending on tasking.

Yeah, what he said. We need to know what you are wanting to power with it. This determines what gear ratios you are gonna need and all that cool stuff. Is it gonna be powering a hydraulic pump or a drive shaft to a compressor or you just want a couple hydraulic remotes that you can connect anything you want to?

Really I'm exploring options for power and air for grease gun, air tools, etc. Space is at a premium.

Glad I found this thread. I want to use a PTO to pump waste vegetable oil from the large holding tanks at the places I can get it, through two filters and into the reserve tank in the bed. A friend of mine suggested I look into this as a way to pump quickly and reliably. Unfortunately he got called out to a shut down with his work for two weeks so I am now starting to try and find out any information for this.
Totallyrad, not trying to hijack your thread but I am interested in the use of PTO as well.

Give Birmingham powertrain a call. Although its been around 10 yrs since Ive used them, they were very knowlegeable in this matter. Very competitive priceing. They also carry a wide assortment of transfer case parts, axle parts and winches. They are located just a few blocks off the 31st exit on I59/29 in Birmingham.

Hope this helps....later

I know just where they're at, I just hadn't thought about them. Thanks Rooster. I've located a couple of systems on the net but there has to be a cheaper way than what I've found so far.

I will have to do some digging around and see if I still do but at one time I had a 6 hole Chelsea PTO sitting in my garage. I dont know why but I did. I dont know what ratio it was but it just might be the ticket.

Didnt I need some extra dually wheels at one time and I think there was a guy on here that had some? Sure would be nice if that guy needed something I had like that some day!

Be more specific... If all you really need is air power, your better off with a 12V pump and tank set-up. A PTO can be costly to install from scratch. What else do you need it for?? Most PTO's can only be used in neutral and are mainly used on HD dump trucks and tow trucks running a hydraulic pump. I know they sound cool but have no "real" use in a pickup truck. However, The WVO pump sounds like a good idea...Here is a quick parts list to give you an idea of whats involved...
PTO unit for your application if there is one.
Hydraulic pump
Driveshaft to connect the PTO to pump
Linkage and PTO cable to engage unit
Hydraulic tank
Filter assembly
and then depends on what your gonna do...
hydraulic lines and plumbing, etc...
Spool valves to control flow, etc...
hydraulic pistons, etc...
And then all the fab work to mount everything and make it all work.

As I learn more I think I am leaning towards a 12V pony pump for the quick transfer and filtering of WVO This could/would save me several hundreds of dollars or more and then I can justify having an extra pony pump on board as a back up.

I think it would be more cost effective to buy a generator to run a small compressor to service the items you want, just put them in the bed of the pickup when you need them.

Check for your local heavy truck wrecking yards or any place that installs hydraulics on trucks, hydraulics shops that repair trash trucks.

You should be able to fine a lot of used equipment; I have installed a fair amount of wet kits on Ln8000 for conveyers.

You will need to know the bolt pattern on the bell housing and the output RPM you want to run, also output shaft configuration weather it be a shaft or direct mount.

You can also get belt driven hydraulic pumps that run off an accessory drive.
