Actually, they are, the local gm diesel mechanic was doing two on the side at home, plus another at the gm dealer, the duramax forums are full of people with issues. Had I known before.. That said, the 06's went to a different HG due to the issues, but some still push it. YMMV

DBLR I disagree that the manual will not hold that much power. How many people with 5.9 or the 6.7 that have the g56 and have added mods that increase the power to well over the new stock power ratings and have no problems. Now correct me if I'm wrong it is the DM flywheel that seems to be the weak point and once that is replaced there have been relatively few problem.

Your right the factory clutch is the problem. I replaced it with a SB DD around 10,000 miles. I pulled up to 42K all the time with my 06 that had a G56.

The G56 does have a breaking point and that was my boost gauge pegged on 60 PSI and 20 1700 pound bales on my flatbed. And I blew 3rd gear.

800 pounds of tq and a 30K GVWR would be a cake walk for the G56 with a good non DM flywheel clutch.

The only reason I went with a auto on my 2010 is I knew I would have to replace the clutch on the manual.

I just do not trust the GMC diesel trucks after owning one.
It was very unreliable, and the reason I am going to buy a Dodge instaed.
