Looking at a 12v, First time buyer

Hey guys, its been awhile since i have been on here, and i have betting wanting to get a diesel ever since i got rid of my 01 dodge. Well i am wanting to save up my money and get me a 12v. I dont know alot about these motors or Transmissions. So is there anything i should look out for? i am wanting a 5spd and a 2500. And what year would be best. Thanks for the info.
Trapper.

Watch out for the 53-block. I think it came in sometime in '97. Good choice going with the 5spd over the AT.

Ya from what i understand the 12v are cheaper than the 24v to make fast. I know that the clutch, gauges and maye a turbo in the near feature will cost the most. right? but if i cant find one i will proly get a 24v. i know the 01 that i had was awesome and now i want another diesel.

I think the 53 blocks are only on the 98 12 valves. Watch out for the KDP find out if its been tabbed if not take care of it. 5 speeds are nice the only thing to watch for is the fifth gear nut falling off. 96-98 5 speeds have a 215 HP pump(most power). It may be 96.5+ not sure.

ya the gauges are a must once you do fuel mods. making the 12v fast could be free depending on your view of "fast" just grind the fuel plate and slide it forward. crank the starwheel or gut it if you want too. then you can time it and either block the wastegate or tighten the wastegate to raise boost. all thats free if you got the tools. but all that is enough to slip the stock clutch so then you start makin it quick after you get an aftermarket clutch. Turbo Injectors etc...

I wouldn't worry about the engine and tranny so much. Check out the REST of the truck to make sure it's working fine; particularly the front end if it's a 4wd. BTW, the 53 block is apparently built differently than the infamous 53 blocks on 24v's. So if you have to get a 12v with a 53 block, I wouldn't really worry about it.

Ya my friend has a 96 reg.cab 2x4 5spd. It pulls so **** hard, that why i want one. I know he has done the plate, governer springs kit, injectors, straight,CAI, gauges,clutch... how much power do you think he has made off of this? AVG? i think he has spent proly around $3k total. he ran a 15 in the 1/4 mile. but he couldnt get traction. He can spen the tires in 4th gear. "THATS WHY I LOVE CUMMINS!"

But it was my fault for selling. but at least now im in the market agian and i want a 12v. Thanks for the info guys.
P.S. how do i know if it has a 53 block?
Thanks, Trapper.

on the drivers side if you get under the truck and look up it will have a 53 about 3/4-1 inch tall on the side of the block right in plan sight.
