Looking at 12v trucks - Buyer's Guide?
I'm in the market for a 2nd gen 12v Ram. I've got a couple of trucks local to me that I want to go look at. I've searched here and on the other diesel Ram forums for some kind of used truck buyer's guide, but came up empty.
I think the biggest item for the 12v trucks is the KDP. Other than that, are there any items that should be on my list of things to ask of the seller and to watch for upon inspection?
Thanks!

Thanks - forgot about the 5th gear nut. Is it possible to check for this w/o taking the tranny apart?
I guess I should have been more clear on what I'm looking at - '97 or '98 4x4 with the 5spd trans.

not really any way you can check, but a good previous owner should be able to tell you if it's been done or not.
it's not a deal breaker by any stretch. the KDP is! if it hasn't been done, do it as soon as you get the truck home!

Very nice - thanks for the tip on the TDR write-up. I was looking only in the forums for this, which is why I missed it over there.
Looking forward to getting my oil burner.

I've commented about this here previsouly, seems like two to three times a month we have someone asking about such a guide. I propose the creation of a "sticky" that could be added to to detial all the things to know.
I have two thoughs for you - and will type more when I have time. CARFAX anything you consider seriously. On a recent car search for my sister, we found three "salvage/rebuilt" cars, one "lemoned" car, and one with a "front end collision." Also, take any truck you consider seriously to a reputable diesel tech and have them perform a full inspection on the vechile. It's more than just an engine you're buying. Be patient and avoid the temptaion to purchase the first thing you see. A replacement auto trans, FYI, is around $3500, so it's worth having a truck really well checked out first.

Thanks for the other words of wisdom... I'm definitely doing Carfax checks on any potential purchases, and I'm waiting for just the right truck to come along.
