Just rode in a Duramax
yeah, just think if a old trusty design can produce 325 hp and 600 ft\p of torque, just imagine what a technology based motor could do......
What's so low-tech about the new "600"?
Similar, if not the same, Bosch HPCR system as the Duramax, which implies similar injectors FWIW. Smart combustion chamber design. No EGR and no VGT, that's about the only differences I see. Oh, and it's cast iron, so it's heavy.
I'll agree, I think they are all good trucks. Each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each make has good trucks and each makes lemons. I'm not a big fan of brand loyalty, but am loyal to dealerships that provide good service.
I would suggest comparing the Chevy to the '04 Ram. The new motor and chassis IMHO are as good or better, depending on your preferences, than the Chevy.

I grew up with Fords&Chevies until my last truck which was a Cummins 92 had 360k on it and was worked hard on a ranch. My current 02 has 66k and i use and abuse it daily.I dont pamper it with oil changes every 3-5k more like 10-15k. Yes i am having some fuel system problems which i will fix after warranty is over. But i cant complain about what this truck will do in stock form. And still have all the goodies in the cab. I have seen hospital generators with Cummins just like ours that run day and night with 10-15 years on the clock ,Now that is impressive ,Down here in Tx there are more trucks than anywhere else. Not all are used for work but the ones that are see some pretty harsh conditions 110deg. days .I can honestly say the design of our Cummins are time tested and that is what makes them great .Something new always comes around faster and with more power. But it doesnt mean it doesnt turn out to be a ticking time bomb after 100k or so. like most seem to do. IE 7.3 ford,6.5 chevy
The majority of the trucks around here are Cummins the distance between A-B down here is in most cases farther than most have to deal with and the average truck will see 100k in a few years not even leaving the state. The greatest thing about these Cummins is the simplicity .I wonder how many would venture to try and change the Pump, injectors, headgasket, etc. on one of the v8 motors. How about a water pump in about 15-30minutes. at autozone for 50 bucks ?
Just my .02 worth.

I have no brand loyalty. My last truck was a Chebbie, I wanted as heavy a built truck as I could get that was reasonably comfortable and would last me forever. I bought the Dodge for the Cummins, the straight axles and the bulletproof trans. On the plus side I love the looks. When I bought it, 1-1/2 years ago it had 98,000mi and I plan on taking it to 500,000+, I tend too keep vehicles for a long time. My Explorer has 208,000 mi on it and is driven daily by my kids too school. My wifes Expedition just turned over 100,000 mi and has at least another 100+ before we get rid of it. Her last vehicle was a 1995 GMC Safari AWD that had 275,000mi. on it. I have never bought new and never intend too. With the internet you can find a vehicle set up however you want in a used one. I let the other guy take the hit on the really big depreciation. I've turned over 300,000mi on at least one gas engine w/o overhaul. That was a 4cyl in a GEO Prism. The point of this ramble is they all have good points and bad points, when I bought mine I was also looking for a 4 door Ford SD with a short box the 7.3 and a 5 or 6 speed. For the money I was willing to spend, $16,500 outright, I think I ended up with a pretty good truck. The thing I've always liked about this website is the minimum flaming and then it's done in jest. After all, when you look at the sigs some of the more active members don't even have a Dodge/Cummins. The Moral of the Story is. Get opinions and advice from those you trust & try too make the best decision from what you have learned and know. After all it's your money and you're the one who has to live with what you bought. Just my .03 and as Rodney King said" Can't we all please just get along. "
A very interesting read here. I did consider the duramax before buying my dodge. Price was a big factor, The duramax would have cost 6000 more. Also a friend bought one and before he had 5000 miles the engine shelled. (could have been bad luck). Biggest thing that made my mind up was my dad. (Boy,, you need the real thing if your gonna spend the money). and it was hard to argue with him. He was an over the road owner/operator for 28 years. Running a freightliner with the cummins engines. My food, clothes and shelter was provided by the sweat of my dad and the dependability of cummins. Im not saying there arent better engines out there. But history and tradition and expeiriance does matter.

He was driving a 2001 GMC dually Duramax with manually tranny. Sharp truck, 4x4, loaded with leather.
Asked him how he liked it.
He hesitantly said it was "okay"
He had 310,000 kms (194,000 miles) and said he had replaced 19 injectors on the thing.
LITERALLY! 19 Injectors!
A good friend of mine also has a 3/4 ton with Duramax?allison. pulled his 5'ver to Alaska and back said he averaged aprox. 10.1 mpg (U.S)
Replaced alluminum heads shortly after he got back.
To each his own I guess.
Definitely not for me though.

I really want a cummins, but this site is no different than any other. Yes, the duramax had injector problems and were fixed, yes the 6.0s have problems and will be fixed and YES the cummins has had numerous pump problems. thats all I'm saying and if you guys think im defending the duramax, i am by no means doing so. Some of you just need to take a closer look at the big picture and get off the CUMMINS horse. It's not invincible. nothing is
Wholy Crap! This is quite a thread...
In response to the initial post, Cumminsdude compares a 2002 Dmax to a '98 Cummins. More over the DMAX is chipped. This sure sounds like comparing apples and potatoes to me.
When I went shopping for a new 3/4 ton Diesel last October, I drove an 03 Ford, Chevy, & a Dodge. The 6.0L Powersmoke was the fastest, but the rest of the truck was way dated. The steering just plain sucked. The Chevy was okay all around. The ride was too soft and spongy. It didn't insprie any confidence. The Dodge was amazing! Maybe not as fast as a 6.0L or as quite as the DMAX, but I had to have one! I do wish Dodge would get on the stick with the AT, but the 48RE is a pretty good tranny, just not as advanced as the Allison or Torqshift.
After driving all 3, I would not buy a Ford or a GM. I would not buy a Diesel with Aluminum heads either.
I bought the Dodge because I was so impressed. The new truck is leaps and bounds ahead of the 2nd generation. I would not buy one of those either.
Just trying to keep this going!
