I don't know about this design but it is encouraging to see companies investing it diesel technologies. I would like to see it successfull, I just can't get excited about GM but that's JMO. http://www.sae.org/automag/technewsl...108Tech/01.htm

Exhaust routed in the inside of the valley, intake through the top of the head.

Man, we must be on the same brain wave or get the same SAE emails.

I think thats the new challenge. Lets see how much stuff we can jam on this thing to make it more complicated.

They don't have a choice anymore - 2010 EPA emissions.

Blame those who legislated such things.

After reading the article, I'm impressed. They actually made it LESS complex, in my opinion. I would have never thought of flip/flopping the intake and exhaust. I am truly excited about stuff like this because it means there will be more diesels on the road in the future. More innovation. More power. It's all good. I'm a Cummins guy, but that Duramax engine looks way cool.

very impressive.....looks much LESS cluttered to me....no exhaust manifolds, no turbo up pipes, no hue intake pipes, and all the egr crap all seems to be tucked in the valley

i like it for a v design

Are they putting it in half tons/SUV's or heavy duty p/u's?
The HP/TQ numbers for it are lower than the current motor in the heavy duty p/u line, but I am surprised they are putting that much power in a half ton framed vehicle

Well, they said they made it to fit in the same place as gasser v-8's and it's only 4.5 liters. I think it'd be great in a half ton. Probably gets killer mileage too.

I think it's an interesting concept. However it amazes me the lengths GM will go to in order to keep the V-8. A turbo charged V motor is inherently MUCH more complicated than an inline motor. I like to see companies push the envelope and change paradigms but it seems over engineered to me. Who knows, maybe something really good will come from it that's good for all diesels. I'll take my simple I-6 any day of the week and twice on sunday. I can adjust my valve lash in less than an hour from start to finish .

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I just think it's always a mistake to make ANY internal combustion engine more difficult to work on. It's a machine, a very complicated machine at that. Things will go wrong on any motor. I still think the I-6 will be the best overall diesel engine for years to come, not forever, but for awhile. Less moving parts = lower parasitic loss in friction. Seven main bearings on the bottom end, one exhaust manifold, simple turbo piping, simple intake, injectors accessible etc....I LUV my Cummins!

They did say this: the new 4.5-L powerplant will be one of the most powerful, lowest-emitting, and package-efficient light-duty V8 diesels in the marketplace, company engineers claimed. Claimed but no proof!

I guess GM forgot that Cummins has been working on a 2010 complaint V6 and V8 diesel engines over the last 10 years and it gets around 33% better fuel mileage then the 2007 Hemi. But I guess its only big news if it comes from GM even though Cummins released their diesel info last year.
