John Deere Tractor Oil
Hey guys, I have a John Deere 855 tractor and I need to change the oil before the summer. Its got something like 500 hours on it and it hasnt been changed since it was new. I KNOW, what am I thinking
Well anyway what I am wondering is if it is factory oil can I switch to synthetic without any problems and if I do what would be the best kind of oil? My other question is how often should I change it? Oh and if anyone knows where and what type of filter it takes off the top of their heads that would be great. If not I'll have to do some research but no big deal. Thanks guys.

I guess my only concern is would switching from standard oil to synthetic hurt my seals? I heard it may leak for a while but would clear up. Is this true. Should I run synthetic or just stick to the norm?
You're saying the oil hasn't been changed for 500 hours!!!?
That's like running a automobile for 25k without changing.
JD recommends 50 to 200 hour changes depending on the model.
I personally wouldn't mess with synthetic due to the risk of leaks, never heard of them healing with time.
I've been using Delo 15w40 in my 12 JD tractors for 30 years no problems.

Yeah I dont know how many hours are on it exactly I was just guessing but I think its close to that. Alright I'll stick with the regular oil.
Maybe I'll do an oil analysis on it. Im curious as to how bad it is! where can I get one and how much?

At 500 you are supposed to change the hydro oil also. That is the big inspection on those. Dealer for oil filter, it is cheap. I had a 755 with a b/hoe and changed the oil every 100 hours. Sold it with over 2500 it ran like a champ. Great tractor. Also clean the hydro screen and replace that filter also.

Send an oil sample to Blackstone or any oil lab and see what they say, just out of curiosity
I have a John Deere engine in my boat, 6466A,it's rebadged as a Lugger, I have used Dello
400 30wt and recently switched to 15-40. Both work good, and give good oil sample results at 200hrs.
I don't go over 200 hrs though. I agree that your JD dealer
is a good place for filters(cheap) and Costco for the oil, by the case, 6-gal jugs around $36
I think JD now has a synthetic oil, and their Dino oil isn't real expensive.

Take off the loader, put a pan under it, remove drain plug, change filter, grease about 500 fittings, all the pedals have fittings also, PTO shafts etc.
Hydro filter is at the back, drain is near the draw bar,(the hose at the back going down has the screen in it.) fill in near the 3pt hitch. ONLY and I say ONLY use Deere Hydro oil. Mine was always clear. Cycle the hydraulics and check the dipstick. Engine off. Again great tractors.
