JD Diesel skipping at high idle

I'm having trouble with a JD 1020 Diesel late model.

The engine has less than 1000 hrs. lately, when you bring the RPM's up above say 1800 it seems to have a faint skip.

it idle's fine and runs smooth below 1800.

it also has a little whiteish gray smoke up over 1800 but none at idle.

timing?

Do you work this tractor or drive it like Ms. Daisy? Are you current on reg maintence like filter and fluid changes?

Is that a little 3 cylinder diesel that you have in that thing? My dad has a 1020 gas with a 3cyl.

My 2020 runs a little rough if you run the rpms up with it just sitting there. Put a load on it, even just moving and it runs perfect.
You could have a plugged up fuel filter.

i tried the fuel filter, no change.

i just moved the timing about 1/16" rotation toward the block.

perfect! It has more response now too!

Yea, a little 3 cyl. diesel. I just did a rockshaft valve overhaul on it also.

and changed the motorola alternator to a "one wire" delco.

next, i'm working on an international 424 gas. It has a 1 1/2 inch pipe thread off of the exhast manifold. every time I try to thread a new piece of pipe into the manifold, it strips the threads off. can I buy a 1 1/2" tap from a plumbing store?

''and changed the motorola alternator to a "one wire" delco.''

I read that the 1-wire delco 10-si will only charge when spun over 3000 rpms--have you found it to be a problem when just putting around? I put a 10-si 3-wire on my '50 Super A and it charges like a champ at 1600 rpms. Just curious.

A quality 1-1/2" pipe tap lists for $176.18 at Grainger.
Sort of doubt you'll find one at Home Depot.
Might want to check with some rental outfits or buy a Chinese one like this http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=42431
