I understand that this was the reason for the discontinuance of the 7.3, but I'm wondering now if Ford and Navistar are looking back on that decision and thinking - 'you know if we'd just spent a few million dollars in development costs and tooling/testing/etc., we might have saved ourselves hundreds of millions of dollars in warranty claims and lost customers'.

Why is it Ford always comes out on top with new cool things. I was just thinking how to make flames shoot out of my exhaust with out to many modifications.

All kidding aside I hope this isnt a situation where we see this from all the big three.

I'd rather have a wrong label than a flame thrower. Who reads labels anyways? Especially inflation labels. If you don't know how to air up your tires without reading directions you probably shouldn't be driving. < not directed at you but the people who need an inflation label>

I don't think that it is the particulate filter technology or the "burn out" process per se. The system is designed to burn off a "full filter" by injecting extra fuel into it and touching it off. But I am sure that this HAS to be a precisely regulated process. Kind of like the difference between a nice exhaust backfire where you just get a little flame vs. a blown off resonator. The problem with the PSD ISN'T the particulate filter, it's the EXCESS fuel caused by leaky injectors. One would think that, if nothing else, Ford and IH would be 100% SURE that they had no problems with fuel injectors this time around.

That gave me a shiver man. My best friend died about 5 years ago in a Ford Expedition fire. Looked amazingly like that. Gave me flashbacks. Back then I did some research and found that there were 9 automotive fire research centers in the US devoted to studying auto fires. 7 of them at the time were funded by Ford. I don't know if that is still the case but it screams coverup.

Formula for comedy

The formula for comedy is:

Pain + distance = comedy

In this instance the pain is from getting your butt burned just walking past your new truck. Distance is achived by buying a CTD.......

Yes, this qualifys as very, very funny.

I just hope we don't have a dodge version. maybe our rigs will hold their value better now with all this unproven emissions garbage installed in new rigs

Now the only option is to buy a GM Kodiak with a pass through cab for the ambulances.. at a substantial increased cost...
What about the Dodge Sprinter?

Guess I'll keep the old 92 CTD and the 2000 F-250 7.3.

That link to the burnt trucks sent a shiver down my spine as well. In the fall of 2000 I had a GMC Crew Cab dually with 454 catch fire on me hauling a load of cattle... Very scary night, ugly situation.

The Karma seemed to follow me too!!! Since we needed another farm truck ASAP, we purchased a used '95 F350 dually crew cab with 460 power, when I told the guy that I bought it from what had happened to the last truck he was ammazed. In the week from when we first looked at the truck to actually purchased and picked it up, the guy we bought the F350 from had a close friend die in a Kenworth fire, he dropped the F350 off on his way home from the funeral!

Almost exactly a year later the F350 had a malfunction of the..... not sure what it's called... Air Pump for emmision control?? and had a small engine fore that was extinguised and resulted in about $1,400 dammage.... AGAIN while hauling a gooseneck load of cattle.

So I sort of have a fear of truck fires and ikely won't be purchasing a 6.4

Pretty bad when they have a special gallery for Ford fires only. Dodge may have electrical issues, but they don't burn the truck down!!!
