A buddy of mine (he has a 97 3500) asked me one day if what he was told was accurate. This is what he was told:<br><br>&quot;So, he told me that there is certain steps to make in order to make the lights on the cluster come on in some kind of sequence to show what the problem with the engine is. It was like turn the ingition on but don't start, turn it off and do this like tree times and supposedly lights begin to flash. Certain lights and certain number of flashes determines what is wrong.&quot;<br><br>Is this true? Is there a way of telling what is wrong with the truck if you don't have a computer to plug in?

On the newer trucks, like my '01, you can turn the key on (not start) then off, then on, then off, then on and leave on, you will see the codes (if any) in the odometer. On the older trucks, this does not work.<br><br>Later, Rob

 

My 96 2500 Gasser will do this to read codes.. YOu do just that cycle on and off three times, leave on and read the check engine lite. The lite will first go 1 - 2 flashes for the opening code then any fault codes in pairs and 5 - 5 to finish..<br><br>The engine has to be at operating temperature and parked for this to work.<br><br>I have a list for the 96 codes in the center console.<br><br>J-eh
