It's getting an alternate fuel souce from somewhere.
See if there's oil in the intake tract from a blown seal in the turbo, or an high oil level in the pan due to a leaking injector.
It sounds like it's a runaway situation.

more details... the gm diesels have a CDR valve on them to reburn the crankcase vapours [like a pcv valve].. a little vapour/mist/fog in the intake from it can be normal.. as for the white smoke???.. if it is a turbo engine and egr equipped, you could get massive black smoke if the egr sticks.. if the fuel pump goes nuts [electronic control] you could have a white smoke situation if the pump goes full fuel and the timing goes way retarded...

Sounds to me like the time one of my GMC Buddies in his 01 had alot of water in the fuel in Florida!!!! Well this only helped the #3 Cylinder Injector Crap out and the entire piston was burnt to he}} and back!!!! Thankfully GM had a recall on his injectors at the time and the entire motor was replaced!!! Good Luck!

Check the fuel return check valve on top of the injection pump, if the pump is going bad it will send small bits of fiber in the check valve and plug it up, then it over pressurize the pump.

My old 6.9 used to do the same thing, same pump on both.

The check valve is a short fitting screwed into the pump, then the return line goes into it.
