Case tractor with 4BT , delayed start...
Anyone got some tips/things to check? Started this winter i assume, but we couldn't tell be because it was cold , but now with temps up , when you try to start the tractor in the morning , it rolls over for an extended period of time before it finally fires (up to 10 seconds), after that first start , it is fine for the rest of the day. Does this sound like an air leak to anyone?
thanks for the help.
Jayme.

Nope , VE style pump. filters were changed in the winter , so i suspect one of them, 2 spin ons and one inline , my money is on the inline , give em all a turn tomorrow and tighten the clamps , i hope that helps it.

Most likely air getting into the system. Isn't that system gravity fed? Check your oil for diesel. You may have a seal gone on the pump. or the transfer pump.

Does it make any differance to give it, say 1/4 to 1/3 throttle while cranking it. Could be that (as an air leak would do) it's bleeding back slightly overnight.

No , the system is not gravity fed , the fuel tank is under the cab , way below the engine, giving it throttle made no difference.
Tightening the clamps on the lines around the inline filter made everything 20X worse , after sitting for 5 minutes there was a slight delay in the start , after an hour it would crank for 20 seconds sometimes, so i pulled the rubber fuel lines today ( ) replaced them , i'll show you some pictures tomorrow of how bad it got, i think i definetly solved the problem, it worked fine all afternoon , true test will be tomorrow morning.

There is almost certainly a check valve in the fuel line, some of them can be disassembled for inspection and cleaning.I have repaired a Case W20 loader with a Cummins engine with the same symptoms without replacing any parts, just cleaning that check valve. Ron

No check valve , unless it is in the lift pump or downstream somewhere , replaced the fuel lines yesterday , went out this morning , temp at about 5 deg, no manifold heaters on the tractors , just either, but with no either , hit the key , it rolled the first cylinder over compression , second one came up and she fired off. for a 4 cyl with 7000+ hard hours on it , i think she still starts pretty good, and it is nice knowing my problem is fixed.
