General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

207000 miles, california truck...they wanted $20000 CDN or about $15900 USD for it....the interior is more or less excellent, and the exterior is in great condition. Anything that I should be wary about? A bit high-priced...

Automatic or manual? 4wd or 2wd? These 24-valve units need to have thier fuel pressure monitored, if the lift pump fails, it can take the injection pump with it. How was the truck used, fifth-wheel, snow plow, etc? Did you run a CarFax on it? Sorry, more quesitons than answers. Check with www.kbb.com for more info.

hm, sorry
auto, 4wd, SLT laramie, full load with cloth no power seats, awesome condition for the miles, but no info on how it was used...the dealer seems a bit shady
They said they had done a carfax, but I didn't ask to see it. The motor was clean, it started up right away...

is the mileage a concern for an 00? I just don't want to over pay for my next truck...plus I've seen a couple other 97-98s with about 125k miles on it for the same price but they go so dang fast up here... :S

Road miles are not a big deal on these. Have a mechanic check it out if you're concerned. If they refuse (dealer) then walk away. Run your own CarFax on it - have actually found that deler who "file" carfax's on thier cars sometimes file "doctored" carfax's !!!! If the dealer's shady, be careful, it may be a rotten tree about to fall on you. Hope not - good luck!

As i have said before...just becuase a vehicle is "clean" does not mean that i was treated well at all. I work as a glass installer and part time detailer at a ford dealership in fort collins CO. Some of the units that we get in I don't even want to sit in before putting on a body condom...Then once i am done cleaning it, you could not even tell it has been driven before (some sarcasm, but you get the point). Having a clean engine is nothing that alil degreasser, a pressure washer and some liquid vinyl can't take care of. There are a few things to look for on the truck that can give insight into the condition: Plow hook up, 5th wheel hitch, check the undercarriage for various signs of wear and debris that will give insight into the usage of the truck, and so on...hope that helps

Ian,

I'll put it this way, I located 96_12V on a Sunday afternoon at a used-truck dealership near where I live, a few years back, where I have previously purchased vechiles. It had just been traded in, so it wasn't cleaned up at all. In fact it was unlocked, so I looked inside, and all around it. It had (and still has) a good sized ding in the rear of the bed where it had hit a pole (tail light replaced), as well as a minor one along the bottom of the driver's door, and a small one in the front bumper. It had a flat cover on the bed, which I have since removed. (You can see photos of my truck, check "member's gallery" at left. It had a crack in the windshield which the dealer replaced, and 247,000 miles when I first looked at it. But there it was, a 5-speed, 2wd Cummins with very little real wear and tear. It was "dirty" in the sense that it had been used, an the interior looked to have been frequented by a cat quite a bit, but the dealer cleaned it up and it was no problem. I trust this dealer, having purchased there previously, and they showed me it was a one-owner.

Most of all, it tracked straight and true, ran like a top, didn't squeak, rattle, or make smoke (except what it was supposed to!) I called about it the next day, went and drove it with a friend who works on concrete trucks. We both liked it, I bought it and he drove it home while I drove my car. I've put a bit into it, but I have had no regrets since buying mine. Best of luck to you, Ian, sounds like a good truck!

Randy
