ATF in diesel?

I would like to get a gen I cummins. I know they lowered the sulfer in the diesel and you have to add additive to the fuel on these older trucks.

How much does this additive cost?

I heard you can use ATF fluid instead, is this right?

I know its illegal, but is off road diesel still formulated correctly for these older trucks?

1) It varies, but $.80 to $1.25 per tank would be a ballpark figure.

2) Please don't use ATF in your diesel! ATF contains additives for transmission operation which may harm the fuel pumps.

3) Off-road diesel is just plain ol' #2 with a red chemical dye.

Does that mean it has the sulfer content to run it without additives?

The problem with low sulfur fuel isn't the missing sulfur but rather the missing lubricity that was removed with the sulfur. All diesel #2 fuel has lubricity agents added back to it, no need for additives.

My feeling is that additives do more to make the user feel good than they do to make the engine feel good.

Does low sulfer diesel store as long as the old stuff? I know when they started "cleaning up" gas it lost some storage life.

FWIW, I wouldn't run anything through my engine that wasn't designed to go through my engine.

Bill,
All I know is that when I don't add the "Juice" when I fill up, there is a noticable increase in the "rattle" from my engine/injector pump.
I didn't add it on the last two tanks, and there is a difference in the sound.
Going out in the rain to "Juice" the latest tank, thanks for the reminder..........

BTW Stanadyne PF.

DexronIII is partially synthetic and will do more harm than good. I suppose a very light weight non-dtergent oil would be a substitute, but, I'm not a great fan of additives. homefromTexasRick

I have to agree with the last few posts... started using PS in every tankfull for the last 10K (i do about 8-900 a week), filled up yesterday afternoon and didn't add to it *just to see*, and sure enough the engine rattles a bit more than with...so i tossed in half a bottle this afternoon. Even if its just my imagination $1.50 is worth the warm fuzzy.

If you really want to screw up your engine add the ATF to the fuel, cause you will.

Red stuff will run the same as the green.... just costs less at the pump, but a lot more if you get dipped.

FWIW it takes several tankfulls to wash all the red dye outta your tank.

Actually it takes seven (7) tanks full to remove it completely. But you'll also need to change your fuel sep too. Anyone that services your truck will note the red color immediately!
