Anybody know about White diesels?

There is a White turbo diesel (engine, not the truck) in the paper here. It's rated at 130 hp @ 2200 rpm. Says it runs, and it's a 6-cylinder. They want $300 for it. Whats it used for? Anything useful for a Cummins on it, like the turbo maybe?

Only thing I can think of is that engine would be for a White brand tractor an Agco product. if it what I think it would be 585cu in Probably not much of a turbo.

Maybe use it for a fast Go-cart?

If it came out of a White farm tractor, it could be either a Perkins, or a Hercules. It's worth more than $300 if it runs, and you find someone needing it!

I could tell you what it is by looking at it

if it came out of a white / agco 6125 or the like, its actually a 5.9 cummins. I have worked on several of these combinations in the past, and they are good runners for sure. Might be worth checking into, just for fun if nothing else.

I agree... It is probably an old 12 valve... Get it if it runs!

If it is advertized as a White diesel, that might be what it is. White made their own diesels for White trucks.

You will know if it is the Cummins 5.9 from the late 80's through the mid-90's. They look just like the engines used in the first and second generation Dodges with the Cummins. That is a decent engine, but the power rating listed does not fit that range.

The most common engine used in White trucks with that rpm and horsepower rating is the Perkins 345D. They were found in the little cabover trucks that were used as fuel service vehicles and for garbage trucks. The Perkins is an excellent industrial engine when run at fixed speeds or in farm equipment, or with an automatic transmission. They tend to break the crankshaft at the flywheel flange when used in trucks with a clutch where they are shifted quite a bit. I would not hesitate a minute to purchase a running Perkins 345D at the listed price, Cat now owns Perkins and all parts are readily available. The Perkins is still used in mainstream farm equipment and lighter medium duty trucks.

The only other non-mainstream engines used in White trucks and equipment was the Hercules diesel and the Waukesha diesel, and both were marketed as a White engine. About all they are useful for is if you happen to have an old Oliver Cletrac crawler or an old Oliver or White backhoe that uses that engine. Frankly, they are obsolete and nearly impossible to find parts that will work.

I have worked on a few 6 cylinder White turbo diesels installed on Sullair Gensets; most were in the 75-150 Kw range.

D4800T was the one I had, if it is the same one this thing is big probably twice the length of ours.

Someone had stolen the starter off this one and I had to track down the numbers. It was a 12 volt Delco starter same unit used on Semi's.

I think they were out of Canton Ohio.
I think WHITE might have been sold to HERCULES Engine Company

I later had to repair this engine when a cat found its way into the radiator to keep warm, the power went out and the engine cranked up, poor cat never had a chance to get out.
The engine started throttle wide open then back on the governor, whole process in less than 5 seconds.

Fan blades went everywhere then out the radiator had to shut the engine down manually.
Red blood and green antifreeze all over the place.

Like a jet turbine sucking a bird.

I checked the manual and they show both Bosch and RoosaMaster pumps but the one I worked on, it had a Bosch injection pump Delco starter for sure and I think it was a Garrett turbo.

We have a few of them around our shop. The ones we have are used for natural gas compressors. Hercules, waukesha, and even some were cummins. If its a hercules or wauk., it's really only worth using as a boat anchor. Its impossible to find parts for them. We usually end up making our own parts for them. But if it runs, it'd be fun to set it to maxfuel, and watch it self destruct....

Military MEP-005 30Kw gensets have WHITE 6 cylinder Turbo diesel engines as do all of the variants incl. 400Hz and TQ units.
Military vehicles also use White powerplants.

I got all of the ancillary and internal parts for White D4800T engines from Engine and Equipment in Rancho Dominguez, Ca.
They had a fairly good stock.

I don't know why you say you can't find parts for them...at least some of them. If it's a model White used in an Ag tractor, I can get almost every part in the engine, and about every accessory.

But I agree, there are tons of different "white" engines!

The 585 was a minniapolis moline engine used in tractors about the time White was aquiring oliver and minniapolis moline. The 585 was never made to handle a turbo and those so equiped had what was called a "high altitude compensator". 585's have some design flaws, only have 4 main bearings, wrong rod bold torque specs in the book led to many of them breaking the rod bolts and you know the rest. Poor piston to bore fit was also a problem, led to the above mentioned failure.

130 hp at 2200rpm, sounds like a Herc to me, 478 cu. in. turbo charged. Used in the White 2-135(might be non-turbo can't remember), 2-155. Also used in miltary trucks.

Could be a perkins also, 354 cu. in. White 2-85 non-turbo, 2-105 turbo.

$300 is a great price for an engine that runs and doesn't have any funny noises. Maybe an average price is it doesn't run and you need parts.
