6.7 powerstroke towing milage

Talked to a guy at the fuel pump this morning who had a 2011 F-350 DRW pulling a 20ft goosneck with a small lift. I asked him what he was getting for fuel mileage, his answer was 8.7mpg and the truck had around 4500 miles.

I was actually disapointed when I heard that. I know I would be in the 10.5 11 easy pulling that load. Anyone else hear any real world fuel economy reports??

That's horrible. I have a 4900 series International with a DT466, and pulling a 12,000lb trailer I'm getting between 10 and 12 miles per gallon depending on if I go 60 or 70 MPH. I know it isn't the luxury truck a new F350 is and it doesn't ride nearly as well, but I only spent $8500 for the truck and I can pull or haul WAY more than even an F550 legally. And the REALLY weird thing is, it is a lot cheaper to insure than my 93 Dodge one ton was.

I read that too. They said they got, what, 17 MPG towing a trailer? I knew it seemed too good to be true.

Chaikwa,
How do you insure your 4900? Is it commercial insurance? I have an F500 but it is my understanding that you can only get commercial insurance for something that big, and then it usually isn't cheap.
I have now found Progressive though, and their price is 50% of what GMAC was, so I'm a whole lot happier, but it is still commercial insurance.
Sorry to hijack a thread, but I wanna know.

Thanks,
Chris

I'm thru Progressive now too. The other companies wanted MORE than what I Was paying for the Dodge and Progressive has been less for the last 4 years I've been with them.

I don't know if it's commercial or not. I'd have to think it is but I don't haul for anyone but me so I have had no reason to question it. I DID question my agent to make sure he knew what he was insuring tho. He assured me I was insured for what I needed to be insured for.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I have a hard time believing that the new powerstroke engine will get 17mpg running free ... lots of mass to move ...

Same here.. bigger heavier truck with all the bells and whistles. No matter how you build it, its going to take the same HP to push it down the road. More cylinders, more heat loss, less efficient. Simple math..

Many of the 6.7L owners are reporting between 15-19mpg running empty... towing mileage is lower...

Ford has an optional 3.31:1 axle ratio as well...
