What RPM's and Milage While Towing?

Gentlemen,
What kind of RPM's do you get when towing a load with the overdirve OFF! I pull a 2002 30' Jayco Eagle 266 at 6250 dry weight. When I pull my camper with the overdrive off at 70pmh, the RPM's are around 2700. Is that about what you'all are getting RPM wise? Of course the noise is ridiculas at 70pmh. Love the sound 8) , its just too loud. Also, I get about 12MPG when pulling with the overdrive off. :'( How about you guys. Adios.

Jones0027,

I got to tow my 32' 5er last year a couple of times, and I didn't switch out of OD any time. I got 19 mpg and run about 1700 - 1800 rpm's at 65 & 70 mph. Coarse, that's on pretty flat roads up here. Will be towing to Gulf Shores, Alabama later on this summer. That'll give me some experience on using the OD. I've driven it in the car, BUT, I know it'll be a heck of a lot different towing a load. Will have a report after we get back. I think we're going in October. [undecided]

Grampaw

That's exactly where my RPMs are when towing w/ OD off at 70MPH.

Most of the time, I just tow in OD. I haven't had a chance to tow with the new tranny and smart controller.... so we'll see how it goes in a couple weeks for the first camping trip!

Tony

You will find that there is little difference in the mileage at high or low rpm except that if you have your foot in it the higher rpm will use more fuel. At a light cruise it is about the same. The difference comes in when you approach a hill at high rpm, you have your foot in it as a high rpm which uses more fuel (and goes faster ;D ) With my heavy loads I can get near the same mileage in either direct all the time or od when fast enough but the speed is faster with od. Watch your fuel pressure gage and you will see when the fuel is getting used by the pump. With WOT you will keep max pressure at low rpm (up to 2200) but drop pressure through fuel use at high rpms. Let off the throttle and the pressure goes up.

With that little trailer, I would just tow in OD. I don't think that you have to wrrry about hurting anything unless the tranny is cycling in and out of OD. Just don't try to drag race up steep hills with the trailer while in OD.

I got about 200,000 miles towing in OD before I got any slip, and that was wen pulling up Jellico at 75MPH

I pull slightly more and use OD all the time with no problems and get 16 MPG on the highway pulling at @2100 RPMs.

Everything I have looked at says no issue using OD unless she slows down in the mountains.

If you tow out of OD at that RPM (2700) you'll be out of the HP/Torque sweet spot (1750-2250) and MPG will suffer
