Fuel milage towing

I was wondering what people get towing with there ctd. I just whent to texas from mass. to pick up my 14k 30ft gooseneck. and I got 12-14mpg towing it back lots of grades. the trailer weighs 4800# empty. This sound right? i also got 18-20mpgs going 70mph at 2100 rpms with no trailer. this also sound right.? Also I am going to moab utah in 2 days towing the trailer with 2 suzuki samurais and gear so probally about 6k on it. what should i expect for milage? any thoughts would be great.

Mileage depends allot on your speed....I get my best mileage towing at about 60 MPH

Seems like it doesn't matter how much weight I'm towing....but more so on speed and hill climbing effect the mileage....I know traveling at speeds 70 and over my mileage will drop to 8-9 MPG with a loaded trailer

I usually get between 10-11 towing my 9,000 lb 5th wheel camper at 70mph in overdrive. I think alot of my problem is wind resistance due to the high profile of the camper.

9.5 - 10 MPG at 70 MPH towing our heavy, tall 5th wheel. For reference, our previous truck was a V-10/47RE/3.54 axle 3500 that got 6.5 MPG towing a 5th wheel that was 2500 lbs lighter than our current RV.

RustyJC;
We also had a 99 2500 4x4, v-10, 4:10 ,47re and towed a 33' Alfa that weighed in at #13100.
MPG was down to about 5.5 after about 130000 mi.. We just picked up our , new to us, 03 3500 ctd. We have the same trailer and are dying to put it on the Cummins! We are thinking maybe next weekend. Am curious about where my mpg will be? Expecting 11 mpg!

mileage...

The Domie - I'd say if you tow as efficiently as you can, and keep it in the neighborhood of 65 mph, you may get 11 out of it.

My 9,500 lb. fiver, I get 10.5 to 12.5 mpg. Biggest factors are geography (hills or flat) and wind direction. My 5'er is one of the tallest I've seen in the front.

I also tow a 24 foot enclosed trailer. I tow both around 67 - 68 mph. With the enclosed trailer, I average 13.25 mpg.

JonD - I think your fuel mileage is right in the range it should be. Happy towing.

Towing

3.54 gears, and 285 BFg's would yield me towing approx 6000 lbs about the same mileage your gettin, just keeping it at 2000 rpms or less. thats dang good mileage for a 24 valve engine if you ask me....

Same here whether in overdrive or not going through the mountains or flatland towing.

So sorry to hear about your misfortune. You see, you get much better mileage using a Jordan.

Oh? I heard that cable produces a lot of drag, especially from windy drivers.

If the Jordan is a DeSoto then the BrakeSmart is a Viper. Bob, I have been trying to educate you for some time now, but I forgot you are retarde...... I mean retired.

this thread makes me feel so good with my 12.5 to 13 summer and 11 to 12 winter while weighing 30,000 gross and that parachute for a trailer. And I am looking for more. Those figures are at 70 steady in od all the time with 3.55 gears. 1900 to 2100 rpm.

Haulin,
You are disgusting - - sickening. I am pretty much in there with Casey, maybe a bit more (the Jordan thing, you know - - hee hee). I hang around 60 to 65 and run about 11.7 to 12. If I hold it at 70 to 75, I drop to 10.5. That extra 10 mph really hits the mileage. 4.10 gears.
