1700 miles later

Well, the wife and I just got back from our holiday travels and just wanted to report a little. Went about 1700 miles from SD to KS with multiple family stops.

I dont know if its the winter blends along the trip or the new ULSD but my milage has dropped a good 1-2 mpg. I averaged 19 mpg roundtrip and most of that was highway of course. I generally pull a 20-21 mpg, but even staying at 70 mph or less and a lot of 65 mph on two lane higways I still dropped mpg.

On the trip down I had wind on my back, and with the topper, my box on wheels usually appreciates a good push. Most of our travels throughout Kansas and Nebraska had little wind as well. Enjoyed the snow I must say, since out here in western SD we haven't gotten squat! Just kinda of odd my milage dropped since Ive made this trip many times in summer and winter and always had consistent mpg's. I always use my Howes as well, and never had any problem with the cold outside as well.

Well, Im not sure what everyone else has been getting latley with the new fuel and the winter blends, but if this ends up being the ULSD, it stinks. Ive got another big trip next summer with lotsa miles so Ill see what happens then too.

Being thats its New Years, me and the wife stopped by and saw our Dodge dealer has a chassis cab with a new 6.7. Nope, I couldnt talk the wife into letting me buy it! Well, looks awesome anyways.

Have a great New Year everyone. God bless.

Sounds about right. My mileage has gone to the dogs ever since I started running this ULSD. Gotta love the way the government thinks. Let's create a fuel that's better for the environment and let's burn more of it at the same time that way the effects will take place sooner.

That's the trouble with emissions regulations tightening up---you have to burn more to pollute less....

Just try getting a Serria Club member to understand that. Oh - we're not the only ones affected here. As the EPA "adjusts" the MPG ratings of vechile in the next year, the most affected type of veichle will be hybrids. And it will be - Down in mileage.

I think ULSD has actually been arround for a few months now.
I never noticed a differance in milage and my 305 seems to run better on ULSD.
I think that the milage drop may be due to winter blend.
I could be wrong.

Welcome to the winter time use of ULSD and the low MPG's we get from it. Mine has dropped about 2 mpg

My mileage went up if anything with the advent of ULSD... maybe my CTD is still breaking in at 35K miles?

Last week on a 3500 mile trip I got over 19mpg on the interstate, loaded over 10K# gross crossing the Applachians. Of course, the 37" Toyos (7th gear) helped a bit.

Well, thanks for the info. Im glad Im not the only one who is getting a little worse milage. However, just in case it is a crappy case of the winter-mix, Im doing another two thousand mile trip this spring with the same setup so Im going to see what I see for milage then. Hopefully its somewhat similar, its going to be through Colorado and Wyoming though so Ill probably see some more hills and higher elevations. Oh well, have a great new year and God bless.

I lost at least 1 MPG over last winter, same EXACT trips from my driveway to an offroad park in PA (and back), same EXACT load of 8700 lbs. Last trip (just this sat.) I tried to be really nice to it and still averaged just right @ 10 round trip. I thought 11.5-12 was bad for my load, speed, and trip and now I'm praying trying to get back to that. Gets much worse, it's getting close to my gasser which got 8.

I think it's winterized fuel - I'm getting the same mileage as I did last year at this time. I get about 16.5 avg. city/hwy in the winter, and about 17.3 non-winter.
