I only have a stock tank. I was asking if I could fill up an auxillary tank if I installed one. I was told I could only fillup my stock tank. Probablly just asked too many questions.

I tip $5 to $8 USD. Makes the guy VERY happy.

From another BLOG

THE CRISIS IS OVER IN MEXICO getting diesel.
No problem getting fuel at any place I passed !!!
No lines to wait in.

It seems safe enough to resume the midnight diesel runs if any one wants to follow me. The gang stealing the Jettas are all in jail. The police caught all the rest of the gang last week. At least 1 Jetta was recovered.

But now the price of diesel was raised to 6.97 pesos so about $2.70 range

Mexican Fire Dept. permit

something else is going on in TJ.

We stopped at two stations yesterday, they both showed us the directive that they were not allowed to fill a tank in the bed of the truck unless we had a letter from the fire department. we are going to try and get one next saturday. has anyone tried to get "the letter" yet?

What's this "letter" supposed to say? I call BS on their part. The fire department has nothing to do with buying fuel.

Well I filled up in Mexicali yesterday. At first they only would fill up 500 pesos worth. While I was convincing him to fill it up all the way. He must have checked the inside of my bed 5 times lol making sure I didn't have a tank in there. Then he asked me how big my factory tank was and I told him 75 gallons. His facial reaction was funny! Any ways after he talked to his supervisor I was able to fill the whole tank up.

Just a heads up. Their checking for in bed tanks and trying to limit you to 500 peso fill up.

Doing this is a loophole thats obviously not going to last. Personally, I don't see the harm in it, but the local news here in Tucson ran a story about people making the trek to Nogales, MX (approx. 60 miles south) to get diesel.

A close friend tried doing it last weekend with a transfer tank in the bed. The station sold him as much as he wanted, but was turned back. He eventually gave the fuel he paid $225 for for $100 to a guy down there who had a dump truck and business.

The guys at the border sounded like morons... saying things like "It has to be 'factory' installed if its in the bed." (Are you kidding me?) They said you can carry 110 gals, but only once a month, and they'll put your name in the computer and check each time... crazy stuff. It seems to me they want to discourage people from doing this, its that simple.

The problem is that people are going down there a couple times a day with their big in bed tanks and filling that up and their stock tanks. Then bringing it back state side and unloading it in to their fleet vehicles just to repeat the process over again.

This is exactly what will kill the whole thing. Although it has to be made into law before it changes. I do not see how they (CBP) can just start making their own rules without something in writing. If anybody does get turned around I would strongly suggest asking for proper documentation to Prove you are doing something wrong. Until then there are laws, and as long as people follow the law, the CBP cannot do anything about it.

Now what they tell you in Mexico.......... That is another story

From post 46 of this thread. These are the DOT laws I found and actually have a print out in my truck just in case the CBP gives me a hard time.

Vehicle-related Regulations Part 393
< 393.63 393.67 >

Subpart E —Fuel Systems§393.65 All fuel systems. (a) Application of the rules in this section. The rules in this section apply to systems for containing and supplying fuel for the operation of motor vehicles or for the operation of auxiliary equipment installed on, or used in connection with, motor vehicles.

(b) Location. Each fuel system must be located on the motor vehicle so that —
(b)(1) No part of the system extends beyond the widest part of the vehicle;
(b)(2) No part of a fuel tank is forward of the front axle of a power unit;
(b)(3) Fuel spilled vertically from a fuel tank while it is being filled will not contact any part of the exhaust or electrical systems of the vehicle, except the fuel level indicator assembly;
(b)(4) Fill pipe openings are located outside the vehicle's passenger compartment and its cargo compartment;
(b)(5) A fuel line does not extend between a towed vehicle and the vehicle that is towing it while the combination of vehicles is in motion; and
(b)(6) No part of the fuel system of a bus manufactured on or after January 1, 1973, is located within or above the passenger compartment.
(c) Fuel tank installation. Each fuel tank must be securely attached to the motor vehicle in a workmanlike manner.
(d) Gravity or siphon feed prohibited. A fuel system must not supply fuel by gravity or siphon feed directly to the carburetor or injector.
(e) Selection control valve location. If a fuel system includes a selection control valve which is operable by the driver to regulate the flow of fuel from two or more fuel tanks, the valve must be installed so that either —
(e)(1) The driver may operate it while watching the roadway and without leaving his/her driving position; or
(e)(2) The driver must stop the vehicle and leave his/her seat in order to operate the valve.
(f) Fuel lines. A fuel line which is not completely enclosed in a protective housing must not extend more than 2 inches below the fuel tank or its sump. Diesel fuel crossover, return, and withdrawal lines which extend below the bottom of the tank or sump must be protected against damage from impact. Every fuel line must be —
(f)(1) Long enough and flexible enough to accommodate normal movements of the parts to which it is attached without incurring damage; and
(f)(2) Secured against chafing, kinking, or other causes of mechanical damage.
(g) Excess flow valve. When pressure devices are used to force fuel from a fuel tank, a device which prevents the flow of fuel from the fuel tank if the fuel feed line is broken must be installed in the fuel system.

100% in agreement, Rock & Travis.

I think having the documentation in your truck is a smart idea. When my friend told me what he went through and what they were telling him, I could tell they were getting the runaround. They might have been let through if they had planned a little better.

No immediate plans to do this myself, but I am printing out what you posted to share. I doubt my friend will try it again, but who knows.

I am intersted to hear of any more limitations by Border Pemex stations. Or BS from CBP. I am considering a $500 In-bed Aluminum tank, but can wait awhile, while this settles down. Seem like anything good like $2.xx/gal diesel will be killed by the greedy, or even Pemex, which is taking a bath on this as we fill up.

I bet the greedy will get this shut down long before the Mexican gov. (Pemex) makes any changes.
