What is the penalty? I have a buddy who is a cop. I have never seen anything in his cruiser that deals with fuel. Weve made a couple of beer runs in it. "Supertroopers" most are not far from that movie. But back on subject I dont run it because it is wrong and real bad for the environment. You think you wont make a difference? Together we do. We dont want to end up like China. They use the good stuff and there cities are smogged out and they have acid rain ect. It depends upon your character. 70 gallons at 2.40 = 168 / 70 gallons at 2.00 = 140. 28 dollar a month difference it would be for me. Not exactly a huge divot in the wallet.

Most if not all off road diesel is now low sulfur diesel.... They are starting to convert to ultra-low sulfur diesel..... that will be a different mess all together....

Cops could care less what you run, it's the tax guys who are after you.
The penalty varies from state to state. Where I live in Montana it's a flat $100 fine.
Don't quote me but I believe in Ohio it's $1000 plus $100 per gallon of tank capacity, the fine for a CTD would be $4500.

Several states have run experimental stepped up enforcement programs to see how much they could take in. Far as I know all have abandoned putting more enforcement in the field, it didn't pay for the increased labor because there really aren't that many people cheating. Most enforcement hangs out at truck scales checking the big rigs, that's where easy money is.

Environmentally I don't feel running offroad is all that bad but not paying your fair share for the upkeep of our roads is dishonest. Fuel tax also supports state highway patrols, drunk driver enforcement and driver's education to name a few.

This is an interesting topic. I've been driving longer than I care to admit and NEVER heard of this subject! Anyway, I'm curious... has ANYONE here ever been ''dipped" in their personal pickups? I'm not saying caught... just tested! I NEVER heard of this. But then again I was never a commercial driver either. It would suprise me if they were actually after the "little" guy.

I live in a heavy agriculture community...lot of corn and soybean farms, land around here is flat and no rocks. My bro-in-law owns the local diesel shop and works on a lot of farm pickups. He said that about 8 out of 10 farmer owned pickups he works on have red die in them. I said "why don't you turn them in" and he said then he probaly wouldn't make any money then. Good answer I guess.

I've been driving diesel pickups since before they they first started adding dye and and have never been dipped nor seen anyone being dipped. I asked the guy who delivers my farm fuel and he said the only pickup that he knew of that had been caught was at the truck scales on the interstate.
He said that sad part for the guy who was caught was that legally he didn't have to stop at the scales.
