Low sulfer highway diesel 500 ppm ????????
Low sulfer highway diesel 500 ppm ????????
I know out here in socal we have been using low sulfer diesel for a few years now but tonight when I was filling up my car I noticed a new sticker on the diesel pump. It said low sulfer highway diesel (500 PPM) then underneath it said something about how it was not to be used in 07 and older vehicles cause it can cause engine damage and it was stated by the government.
I was scratching my head when I read it. What does it mean? Are we gona have two kinds of diesel for newer and older diesel in 07. If somebody has scene this sticker and has some idea as to what the heck it means please inlighten me

I'll hazard a guess. I think the sticker actually said not to use that fuel in '07 or NEWER vehicles. That's because it is low sulfur fuel, not the new ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) that the new engines require.
diesel now is 500 ppm. the new ulsd will be 15 ppm. i believe the new ulsd needs to be in use by october. refiners/distributers are probably already starting to phase out the 500 ppm diesel fuel.
This may clear up some of your questions.....http://www.chevron.com/products/prod.../ulsd.shtml#A4
I saw a sticker on the pumps of one of the card lock ststions that we use at work Friday. It said:
"LOW-SULFUR HIGHWAY DIESEL FUEL
(500 -PPM Sulfur Maximum)
WARNING
Federal Law prohibits use in model year 2007 and later vehicles and engines.
It's use may damage these vehicles and engines. "
The sticker was on all of the highway fuel pumps but not on the off road pumps, so I don't think they had anything with a lower sulfur content available.

"All on-highway heavy-duty diesel vehicles manufactured in model year 2007 and later will be required to use S15 (ULSD). These vehicles will be forbidden to use diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 15 ppm (parts per million)."
