low sulfer diesel

My Step dad talked to a diesel mechanic about it and said that in the long run it will hurt the motor and that we should be adding a additive evey tank, why woudl they market something that is gonna hurt the motors, we have one place around here that still has old diesel should I fill up with that if I can because it is kinda out of the way or is the low sulfer gonna hurt to run on my 2005. What additive to run.

There are plenty of discussions, debates, etc. on this issue in the general diesel section fuel forums.

It's not worth going out of your way for the old fuel, its days are numbered so you might as well start with the new fuel now. I'm not worried about the new stuff because I've always used a conditioner in my fuel. It's a good habit to get into.

ULSD is suppose to come with enough additive in it so no additives are necessary.

That's what's suppose to happen but I don't trust the oil marketers so I add a pint of TCW3 oil every other fillup. I'll be doing this for about a year or two to see how things pan out. I'm assuming with time, problems will appear because of ULSD and oil marketers will eventually get the correct amount of lube additive mixed in.

You can also run a mix of Bio. It is supposed to have much better lubricity than ULSD. There is a station about 20 miles from my house that has B20 and B75. I have been told they also have B100. I saw the B20 and B75 and the B20 is $0.10 more than regular #2, not sure of the price on the B75.

About 10 to 12 gals of B20 to 25-27 gal of #2 should give you something around a 5% mix.

What do you suggest for a additive and how much do you put in per tank.

I've been using Power Service in mine. I started using the recommended amount (with old fuel) which is 8oz I think. With ULSD I run about 10-14oz depending on predicted temps and how much is left in the bottle. I think you mostly have to experiment since there are so many variables (i.e. location, elevation, quality of fuel, temp, driving habits, etc.). Find a product you like and change quantities until you find something you like. If you do a search on "additives" you'll find a lot of different things like MMO, Howes, Power Service, two-cycle oil and mixtures of each.

There are many conditioners and lubricity additives on the market. Stanadyne is reportedly one of the best, but it's pricy. Check your local parts store, or the auto dept. at Walmart, do some reading, and pick a brand you like. The instructions are on the bottle.

There is certainly a lot of speculation about how ULSD is going to perform, I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm not too worried about it though and I have continued to use stanadyne the same way I was using before the switch.
