Question Bio-Diesel! Give Me Your Thoughts!

Ok! I've been anti bio-diesel for a while, due to what I have read about the stuff, loss of fuel mileage, Inj pump, inj., fuel line failure etc..., and it's usually more then #2. With the rising cost of #2 ($3.64 a gallon as of tonight ) I'm being forced to explore other alterantives. Next month we have a bio-diesel station opening. So my questions are for those of you using the stuff have you had any problems or issues, mileage??? driveability??? Thanks

Tye

Approximately 5% worse mileage (heavy on the approximate) outside of that, no other issues so far. Have been running it off and on for about 3k miles.

This is with B2 and B5, more than that I can't tell ya. I think Chrysler is using B5 as the "factory fill" for the CRD Liberty's and the new Cummins trucks.

Personally, I'd brew it myself for dirt cheap and just run b-100. I'll take the hit in mileage for the cost of fuel. Not to mention that bio diesel is actually a better lubricant than normal diesel and is a better cleaner than anything else on the market. So good in fact that it'll clog your fuel filter fairly quickly.

I run B100 and have for about a year. My truck runs fine. I make it myself and am very careful how I do it and I wash it well. Lost one LP but who hasn't?

If you can get biodiesel run it. Burns much cleaner than #2 and a better lubricant. Will see a decrease in fuel economy at the higher % levels.
The nearest BD station is about 20 miles from me but I make it a habit of filling up there when I'm in the area.

Thanks guys. I wonder how my FASS will hold up? So lets say I put 1/2 of a tank of #2 in and then 1/2 B100, would that be considered a 50/50 mix, B50 or would it be a higher or low grade?

I ran b5 last year in my o4 and I swear I got better milage!!!! Power feft the same to. Running B10 now in my 06 should have gone to B20 milage on my o6 went up 1.5 with TST on 1 and I started using B10 at the same time. When I filled my bulk tank regular diesel was 2.69 100% soy diesel was 2.35.(filled just before the ultra low sulfer came into area)
I think the term biodiesel is somewhat confusing their is soy diesel used cooking oil and several other things and it is all called biodiesel. milage loss may be true with used cooking, I don't know never had the chance to run it. But from my experiance with soy diesel ,I think it is better (my experiance anyways.)

I have 1500 miles on B20 and I have a FASS pump only.
This is one tank for me with the AUX tank.
So far the only thing I see different is no smell and no smoke.
Starts and runs the same to me, and same fuel mileage.

Bio-Willie stuff, and I have to wait in line to get it. Monday it was 2.86 here.

Biodiesel

I've been using commercial grade bio (not home brewed). Tried it at 2, 5 and 20 percent. At 2 and 5% I see a 2 mpg increase in mileage on a regular basis. The engine is quieter and no need for power service etc. At 20% the mileage was at .5 to 1 mpg improvement over No. 2 diesel. In fairness, I didn't run 20% very long. I have more experimenting to do. 2 to 5% seems just right for my '05 truck. My old 12 valve does great on higher blends.

Your FASS could suck cold WVO out of the tank with no issues......... Bio-diesel doesnt hurt the FASS any........I think i am going to be looking at the WVO conversions before too long.....tons simpler....just pricey for the retrofit kit.........BUT i would think that it would pay for its self very quickly........

from what I have read, the only reason injectors and injector pumps have poblems is because there is too much water in the biodiesel, and that means it is made incorrectly. As far as anything else, The only reason it could hut the fuel system is it cleans all the gunk out of the fuel system, that is wy you change the fuel filter so often after using it for a while. After everything is clean the engine is supposed to love it. This is pure that I'm talking about.
