I'm looking to swap a '49 ford f4 cab on to my D350. One issue is that the cab is about 10" narrower than the original cab, that coupled with the steering box on the outside of the frame rail makes for a sharply angled steering column. I know I can go with a gear/chain driven solution, but I'm wondering if I can swap the front/modify the front end to get the steering box on the inside of the frame rail like a 2nd gen? The existing front end needs to be completely rebuilt.

Maybe it is better askes what options are out there?

I have no idea but I would definitely be interested in your progress.

 

Sound line a nice custom build.

Remounting the steering box to the inside would take a lot of re-engineering of the steering geometry. I would try to mock up something using parts from Flaming River, Far From Stock or another aftermarket steering supplier.

Or you could buy a front frame section from a 2nd gen in a wrecking yard and weld that on to your D350 back half.

Chain drive sounds sketchy, no way I would pass any kind of chain drive steering for safety inspection.

This is how I bought it from the guy that first started the swap. I'm now trying to figure out how to move forward. As you can see the cab is quite narrow.

 

That is a really nice project. I've been thinking about doing the same with a post war Dodge cab I have.

That Wizard Fab unit seems solid. I wouldn't be afraid of that. I didn't know that style of offset steer set up was available.

Is the Dodge frame otherwise a fit for the cab?

A Chevy C30 frame (73-87ish) is 4" narrower for most of its length, and a couple inches narrower at the front. Steering box is still outside the frame... but every bit helps.

The front suspension & brakes are also a much better match for the weight of the 6BT.

 

yes the dodge frame is a good fit besides the steering. Moved the engine mounts back about 3 inches to get a bit more clearance up front for the radiator and intercooler. Now looking at a water/air intercooler option I saw on Jay Leno's show. It looks promising.

 

Non-intercooled is usually fine unless you're towing, pulling, or dyno-champ.
