78 power wagon
Just bought myself a 1978 power wagon 1/2 ton 4x4 for 500 bucks. It has a 360 gas motor in it and a 727 trans. Truck is complete motor runs but has issues. My question is I want to drop in a 4 cyl cummins in the truck will the trans bolt up to the engine with a adapter or do i have to get a different trans. This truck is going to be street legal truck and i was wondering if anybody has ever done a swap like this before. Any input would be helpful. Thanks you for your input Garry

I don't know anything about the conversion process, but if you post pix of it as you move along, I'll be sure to subscribe...
Love those old trucks body style's.

There is definitely not enough gears in a 727, top speed would be an issue. I have a 77 with a 5.9 in it. If i remember, i believe that you can buy an adapter plate for any first gen if you run a first gen transmission. If you are looking at running something newer like a nv4500, 47rh, 47re or 48re you would have to get an adapter from a second gen cummins. the plates are a different thickness and the starter clocking is different. I am running a nv4500 in mine and i must say, the overdrive is a must. Let me know if you got any more questions. I have been building this truck for about 2 years now, so i got a lot of info on this kind of swap.
