Fan Clutch Removal in Calgary
Does anyone in the Calgary area have the special tool that is required to remove the fan / clutch assembly available to lend me. Dont want to drop $150 for a tool that is only to be used once. I have the 36 mm wrench, just need the unit to hold the clutch itself. !992 W250

I have one you could use...I fought with mine until I talked to Rob....All it took was one hit with the hammer on the wrench and the nut poped off.If you want to buy your own,PA sell them for about $14.00.

mine is reverse thread.
i used an air hammer and hit down on the driver side of the thread (clockwise)
in the past i have also used a sledge hammer with a 1.5 foot piece of flat steel - takes a lot of hits, but it eventually loosens and spins off.
you can come by and use the air hammer if you like . . .

Ok did a quick search and found that 2002 and older is reverse thread, 2003 and newer regular thread. Basically if you have the viscous clutch its reverse and if you have the electric clutch its regular.
This really screwed me up when I swapped the engine in my '03 as I had had the fan off previously in both my '92 and '01 and they were reverse thread. After messing around for over an hour I finally figured it out.
Ok did a quick search and found that 2002 and older is reverse thread, 2003 and newer regular thread. Basically if you have the viscous clutch its reverse and if you have the electric clutch its regular.
This really screwed me up when I swapped the engine in my '03 as I had had the fan off previously in both my '92 and '01 and they were reverse thread. After messing around for over an hour I finally figured it out.

Thanks guys, I never thought of trying Princess Auto. Not only did they have the tool , it was on sale for $8, and I dont think I had to strike the nut more than three times before she broke free. As always , its amazing how simple life is with the right tools.
In theory , I dont suppose removing the fan will help that much but at minus 20 , every little bit helps.

I know a couple guys with 12v that pull the mechanical fan every winter. run all winter no fan, and reinstall it in the spring. when it starts to warm up
