Neutral light?

I drove a 2010 4x4 dually the other day and noticed a "Neutral" button/switch below the 4WD selector. You push it but nothing happens. The dealer had no clue what it was? What it fo?

It puts the transfer case in the neutral. Look in the owners manual for 4x4 operation...

Yeah. The electronic switch does not have a neutral position to keep it from getting accidentally bumped into neutral... I think you have to hold it for a certain amount of time and do something else to make the transfer case go into neutral...

I think I'm going to miss my manual shifting transfer case..... But I bet it's worth it not to have the CAD setup....

Ah... It's 6 to one, half dozen to another anymore.

If it had some lockers in it... that would be sweet.

Im pretty sure Mark is right. I know on mine you have to press the neutral button and then turn the 4x4 **** to neutral. I would think the '10 would be similar.

What is the CAD setup?

NOTE: The transfer case NEUTRAL position is selected
by pressing the recessed button located on the lower left
hand corner of the 4WD Control Switch. The transfer case
NEUTRAL position is to be used for recreational towing
only. Refer to “Recreational Towing” in “Starting and
Operating” for further information.

Correct -the button must be held down for a certain amount of time before it begins the process - so you don't accidently bump it and put it into neutral.
Someone copied a portion of the instructions - there's a sequence of actions you must follow and perhaps the most important issue when doing it is to be sure to turn the engine OFF before you put the tranny selector back into Park when the transfer case is in neutral.
I tow mine behind the motorhome using this feature -one reason I stay with Dodge...

Knock on wood, but I haven't done it on my '10 -but did once on my '06. Not a pretty sound...and the guy who sets up my vehicles to be towed has seen trannys damaged by doing this.

Yeah, I have not either, but my OL did one day when she was helping me. Not her fault, the transfer case popped into neutral for some reason or another...

I'd rather get punched in the mouth than hear that on my truck...

The CAD is the vacuum actuated thing that connects both front axle shafts together. Not the best setup in the world.... Sweet site for the manual download!

Simple

If your truck was in 4low and you switched it to 2 wheel drive or 4hi while driving you will hear a grinding noise. If this happens and the trucks neutral light comes on and stays on when in drive, reverse or park don't panic. Don't worry, chance are you didn't blow the tranny out and the truck is just protecting itself. The solution is simple. Shift the truck into neutral. When in neutral press the brake down and press and hold the neutral button down for 5 seconds. The light should switch off and reset, and you will be able to drive again. Your back in business. -Braden
