My 03 2500 with Cummins and 6 speed has a noise or slight rattle when I put it in neutral with the clutch out. Sometimes worse than others and sometimes I cant hear it at all. ANyone have same problem and is it maybe a throw out bearing. Its been there since the truck was new. Only 4600 miles on it now.

 

I talked to a transmission guy today. He said that every thing is spinning in there when the truck is in nutral and cluth is out. <br><br>He was telling me that he has worked on several Fords ZF 6 speeds. All the gears are moving and then the truck is shifted into reverse and it wears it. He recomended that you put the truck in a forward gear then into reverse.<br><br>I am not sure he knows what he is talking about except he is known to be one of the better Trans. guys in the area.

 

Had a Jeep Wrangler with the nv4500 and it did the same thing. If I remember, it was the input shaft. Warranty took care of it, but it always made a little rattle.<br><br>Mike

 

Well I was going to have them tear into it, but it doesnt seem to be getting worse, so figured if it aint completely broke better not try fixing it. Might cause more harm than good. Probably not something that would leave me stranded anyway. So ill wait and see if it gets worse. Like I said sometimes it seems to go completely away. Thanks

 

Have you checked your trans fluid level?<br><br>My six shooter is very quiet in every position.

 

Check the fluid level. But most of them make some noise in neutral. I know of one guy that had the trans replaced because of the noise. It was one of the first 03s built. The new one did the same thing. Mine does it too but seems to be getting less noticeable as I put miles on it. May be just my imagination. I think it is noticed in the 03 because the motor is so quiet.

The fluid level is probably a little low. Mine took a quart to shut it up. Uses 5W-30 synthetic. There were quite a few threads on this very subject here and on the TDR site. Dodge's official answer... Normal Noise &gt; <br>Jeff

 

I also hear a slight noise in neutral with the clutch out but I believe this is from the throw-out bearing and it is normal. I have owned quite a few manuals in my day and everyone had a least a little throw-out bearing noise when the bearing was un-loaded. It will typically be louder when cold and will disappear when you put the clutch in. If it gets louder when you put the clutch in (load the bearing) it means the bearing is getting ready to seeze-up and you best be changing it. <br><br>On the other hand, if you have a problem with the trans then it should be louder or at least stay the same when you put it in gear. My 6 speed is noisey in neutral and has been since it was installed in 2000. It bothered me at first as always but I think it's quiet now.

 

:'( All manual transmissions have what is called freewheel<br>with the clutch out. This is a normal condition that will change with temp. With the quite motor of the new truck you will hear things you could not hear on the other units. :'(

 

This is a common problem with diesels. Sometimes if you just tap the clutch momentarily it will go away. 3208 Cats were some of the worst noise makers. Someone mentioned the quiet engine--it's probably true, that with the quiet engine, you can hear things that the old engine drowned out.
