48re no reverse and Neutral is first gear lock.

ok, so last night for new years i had a few and of course some redneck show off type stuff was bound to happen. of course we hooked a blazer to a frontier and they pulled each other around a little bit. then the tire burning comp started. and my dumb *** was not about to be undone. so i pulled the cummins out and did a couple of power brake launches. the only time i put the truck in reverse was when i backed out, everything else was in a forward drive gear of some sort.
well i couldn't back out for another run since it wouldn't move in reverse. it would load up and torque was applied to something but beats me. this morning i checked it all out as i new not to mess with it last night. seems that neutral is first lock and D, 2, 1 all work as they should. i drove the truck home and nothing changed, worked great on the way home, but still did the same thing when i checked it at home. any ideas?

i'm just not transmission savvy

Yep you burned up the foreward clutches so that they will not release. the only way to back it up is to shut it off and push it.

ok, so that makes sense. next question is, will it still take me down the road without leaving me sit. i would take it easy on it, i'm just at my parents place for the new year and need this thing to get me back home about 1.5 hours. i have a spare vehicle once i get it there. good to know though since the tranny needed rebuilt anyway at 150k, it just makes me quit putting it off.

There are no sure things in this life especially when it comes to broken trucks. It would depend on how much trash got into the pan from the burned clutches. I drove a ford once for over a year in the same condition. The fact that they are siezed does not affect the restof the trans unless trash gets in the valve system.

When you are in neutral everything is off.... no pressure. When you put it in foreward the clutches lock up and stay that way with one way clutches (roller clutches) taking care of the higher gears. When you put it in reverse the third gear clutches and the reverse band or clutches engage. So with them siezed it is in both foreward and reverse.

That reminds me of how the old A833 4sp manuals would act sometimes after the shifter got worn out and sloppy. You could get it in reverse and 4th at the same time if you weren't careful and acted like it was just seized up, which technically I guess it was, but not because anything was really broken.

Drunk and behind the wheel.. must have been fun.

Public admission of it is not called for, nor is doing it.

Read his post over and over....I see no mention of alcohol consumption. As usual you let your wild imagination ASSume that something bad or illegal was taking place.

......could be he just got done eating three dozen glazed donuts on a dare, was amped up on the sugar, and later became too sick to be crawling around under his truck.

i'm not really sure that drunk driving is illegal if it's on private property when no charges are pressed. you must remember that this was a good ole boy party far from anything you would call public. therefore no one person that didn't know what was going on was around. call me old fashioned, but as long as i only put myself in danger, then why care about it. if my truck ended up down into the weeds with a tree buried in the bed, then oh well. either way, no one was in harms way, and i had about a sixer to that point. so i still had plenty of judgment, just no sense.

either way, i changed my post a little to make it board friendly. guess i could've omitted that part.
