no reverse, driving in neutral

I don't know. I did some light wheelin', which you really couldn't call it wheelin, just driving around in some loose dirt and small hills, kinda like driving up a tall ditchbank, for about half hour last night. trans hot light never came on, water temp never over 200, shouldn't have been all that hard on it, used reverse several times but then on our way out I barely got stuck, tried to back out and that's when it started...no reverse, tries to drive in neutral, pull the shifter into 1st/2nd and it drives okay. got out and limped it the 5 miles back to the house.
thinking MAYBE somehow the shift linkage was bent/not lined up I pulled that off and shifted the trans by the arm right on the trans, operates no differently. when it's in neutral, it feels like it's slipping/driving about 50%.
the trans fluid smells like someone was using a die-grinder cutoff wheel on steel inside my trans, which means very very bad things.

worst part is I'm in Yuma, 10 hour drive from home and from the shop that built the trans and I don't have my tool box with me, only my leatherman and sog. and no other truck to trailer mine home, my brother is taking his '05 towards the other coast.
crap-dang.

anyone know what's wrong with my trans? had it rebuilt about 6-7 months ago too for a couple grand

That doesn't sound good at all. I would call the shop that did the work on it and ask them if they can recommend somebody in Yuma to look at it. Hopefully it is still under warranty.

Creeping in N usually equates to a welded set of clutches.

ah, that explains the cutoff wheel/welding smell of the trans fluid. I could see that being a little bit of a problem.

apparently I'm 1,050 miles over the 10,000 mile warranty, which I can document at least roughly 8,000 of it being freeway traveling miles driving out of state, the rest of it city/local highway and maybe a few hundred miles towing and light 'wheelin...no way that should burn up a trans and no way the shop that built it shouldn't stand behind that.
I'll see how it goes tomorrow, I found a shop here in Yuma that's a reputable shop from information I've gotten today and an ATRA member for warranty purposes.
fingers are crossed.

...and it looks like the getting stuck/wheelin part got ya.

Without the proper mods getting stuck in an older 47rh/re equipped truck was hard on things. The low reverse circuit needs some attention.

it just doesn't seem like it was that bad of a stick either, I was in some loose dirt/sand and not aired down, started too slow up a little incline and sunk in a little.

hmm. the main hub was cracked, which the guy that's doing the repair said will usually only happen if it's dropped or something like that(not neutral drop but mechanic drop the hub on the floor) so the bands were never getting enough pressure, so apparently my trans was slipping the whole time and it just seemed like the converter stall was a little high. pretty much got a full rebuild, he replaced all the electronic stuff in there along with the rest of the wear parts.
they've reassembled the trans and tested it and will be re-installing in the morning and sending the bill to the original shop.

So to anyone in Arizona I highly recommend Ramco Transmission; they seem to be the western states' version of Dave Goerend. Ramco also builds their own converters for the diesel dodges. Anyway, they've taken care of me really well and have been really helpful.

....this hub perhaps? I installed a new one along with a new shaft on Dave G's recommendation.

not sure, my brother talked to the guy at the shop picking some stuff up on his way out of town; i'll see it tomorrow, he's going to let me have it for my collection of broken drivetrain items(and so he doesn't have to deal with throwing it away). i'll post a pic of the crack.

Glad to hear the good news Jon. Bring that gear to the bbq with ya, it can hold the table clothes down.
