The place I bought my truck told me not to idle my truck much in park .He said to put it in neutral when I idle any and even to start it in neutral. He said something like it isnt pumping fluid in park but it is in N and thats alot of the cause of auto trans failure. Also he says the dealer told him about this.Has anyone ever heard of this or is he full of it.thanx for any help

Ive always heard that it is the stock torque converter and shift valve body but I could be wrong as I have only owned sticks in my last 6 trucks

Yes, idle in Neutral, you can start it in Park, but put it in N after starting. Word is the TC won't fill in Park and if you were to drive away, you might experience some slipping/no power but idling in N will eliminate this and perhaps extend the life on your trans.

You'll notice you check your Trans in N, not park, must be a reason for that.

The fluid doesn't circulate in P on the stock auto but it does with most aftermarket upgrades.

yup, possibly the only downside to the 727/518 design is that the pump doesn't pump in park. Lots of old mopars will suffer from convertor drainback and will appear to be very sluggish leaving in the morning. Idle for 30sec in N and the pump will have plenty of time to take care of that.
This is important for those guys who might have to pull off cuz the tranny temp goes high, you need to keep it in N when you stop, so that the fluid is being pumped through the cooler.

I'm not sure if the transgo kit has instructions on making it pump in park, but I would kind of doubt it. I know there are a couple different 'levels' to the kit, depending on how much you want to take apart and how comfortable you are drilling out passages and stuff in the valve body

This is also a great winter trick to warm up the tranny in neutral because the TC fills up and gets the fluid moving so better driving when cold.

With the new manual valve in the Transgo kit , they will pump in park.

Did you guys know the Allison used by chevy has the same issue?
I have done many, but now feel the best valvebody choice is one from DTT. Just my opinion.

I had to redo my tranny. The dealer won't admit this problem existed. I found out about this on this site. Ever since then when I idle for any length of time I use neutral. I heard it dries out some seal. Mine started shifting strangely and then refused to drop into 1st when i stopped. This was 3 years ago and haven't had a problem since.
