Anybody heard of WATER INJECTION on a diesel??? Ever done it???

Middle of the day and I was browsing around and came upon this board here...

http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9751014871/m/2391054691?r=4501016691#4501016691

In it the guys are discussing installing water injection systems on their diesels. Apparently the water -- which can have methanol blended in is supposed to atomize and clean the system to prevent coking.

Two of the guys have 1st gens. I was wondering if they're also kicking around this board?

Anybody heard of this setup?
Anybody done it? And to what effect?

The guys on that thread sound pretty happy with themselves.

I'm thinking about it. I've got a 79' NA 240D that burns anything I can get my hands on and now I've got a 90' D350 that'll probably do the same thing.

This idea is very interesting to me.

water methonol injection is very common on diesels. Mine is a homeade system designed and built but a member here on the forum (loch). It gained me 63hp and 113tq on the dyno. it kicks on a simple boost switch. The wonderful thing is that the water absorbs heat (lowering exhaust temps) and the methonol adds the power. so not only do you get a power boost, you also have lower temps!
snow performance makes a kit and also cooling mist. I am sure there are others but i don't know the names.

Snow Performance says that water only can give you up to 20RWHP increase and 50/50 W/M can run as high as 70 RWHP with 70/30 water to methanol is optimum for towing. My last dyno numbers are in my sig and I ran a 50/50 mix. You can feel the W/M kick in fairly smoothly.

I run water and methanol on my diesel. It makes a power difference and cools the engine on them hard drag runs.

I'm asking specifically in regards to cleaning. The guys on the biodiesel forum I linked to above are using this to prevent coking from the use of waste vegetable oil. This summer I intend to outfit my D350 with a full waste vegetable oil conversion and 400 gallon fuel carrying capacity for a big road trip from here to Newfoundland (Canada) and back again.

I figure every advantage I can build into the system is a plus. I have converted three vehicles myself but this will be my first truck conversion.

Is this water injection a performance mod or can it be a maintenance mod as well?

Do I need to be all suped up to do this with the pump turned up and all or can I add this to a basically stock rig???

It can be both maintenance and performance. Cooling Mist makes a system that is tunable ion the fly that you can dial in different flows for a given operating condition.

No you do not have to have it bombed to have it work. It would work just fine on a stock truck.

Check out the Cooling Mist, Snow performance or Devils Own web sites for what their systems offer.

So after looking around it looks pretty easy to do.

For the more fiscally conservative types has anyone designed their own?

It seems to me that this can be done with most parts picked up from a farm supply store for a fraction of the cost?

Here try this thread there's some pretty good info and instructions. Plus the price seems pretty reasonable.

If you want to know what water alone can really do ask the big time racers and sled pullers, they will tell you that water injection is the only way to go and not water meth. Talk to them and they will let you know in probably more detail than you really want to know.
