Wiring 100w lights into factory fog lamps...

Ok fellas, I've got a question. I built a nice, big "cow-catcher bumper for my 06 Mega. I installed 100w aircraft landing lights into the bumper instead of the wimpy factory fog lights and just spliced into the wires to power the new lamps -only I'm experiencing something funny... When I push the fog lamp switch the new lights flash three times before coming on, then they work perfectly. Any ideas? I'm not giving up the new lights 'cause I built buckets into the bumper especially for 'em -that, and the fact that they're crazy bright

use the power wire for the fogs to trigger a 30 amp relay that is wired directly to the battery. You can find wiring diagrams on the net pretty easy.

Im not sure but i did something that is called a fogzilla mod. It uses a high beam out of, I think older chevy trucks. I believe its a 100 w bulb or so. Its been a while since i did it. Do a search for fogzilla and that will tell you how its done. Or pm me with other questions. Joel

Appreciate the help. If I wire a relay will it cause the computer to think there is a bulb failure since it doesn't pull as much load as a bulb? I'm pretty sure the switch just triggers the computer to operate the lights -don't think it physically switches the lights on like on my old '01.

On a side note, I'd like to tap into the bed light so that I can wire a relay to trigger some backup lamps mounted into a pipe bumper on the rear of the truck. Guess I need to start another thread, but I'd like to find out an easy way to tap into the bed light circuit. Dashboard switch?

for the backup lights I tapped into the 7 pin trailer plug harness. Im not sure on the light out thing I run my lights off their own switch.Im sure a resistor would work thought.

I agree that the trailer harness would be easier, I just wanted to be a bit different I guess -though I'll probably go the same rout as you Synd.

you need to run a relay of the wire you used, fill in your location & sig & see if someone local can help you

search for my perimeter lighting thread, has info you need for bed light.

Replaced the bumper on my 06, and I don't get the light bulb out warning for the fog lights that were removed with the factory bumper. I researched the wiring harness, the factory wires are 18 gauge thus good for around 100 watts (10 amps) depending up lenght. I have ordered PIAA 540 fogs, and will use the factory harness to trigger the PIAA relay. If you are running 2 100 watt lights, they you need a lot larger wiring.
