Transfercase shifter question

In my new search for an 03-04 CTD I have noticed that both 03 and 04 models have had the transfercase shifter in the floor. One 04 had it in the floor and another with the switch **** on the dash. Is the traditional shifter standard or an option? Thanks>

Standard. In my opinion it is the best way to go. The shift on the fly method goes out too often and too much can happen to it. All you have to do is ask someone who wheels alot and they will tell you.

I believe the **** was only available in the Laramie trim. Having owned several chebbies with "the ****", and nothing but trouble, I was grateful that mine came with a floor shifter. I trust a mechanical linkage over an electrical circuit anyday for redundancy IMHO.

Yea give me the shifter on the floor every time. It's a tried and true system.

I have heard of only one guy on all sites complain about a switch not working properly . It works good and there is very little trouble with it . I have put mine in and out of 4x4 40 times in one day and never one glitch . The clean floor space is nice and I like the extra room , there is nothing wrong with this set up . I have always had the floor before this and this works smoother and faster with less trouble . I was skeptical myself before I got my truck with a lot of guys spreading wrong information on the electric shift . A Chevy , Ford or whatever set up gave me trouble does not make this one junk . I had problems with all my Ford power windows should I avoid Dodge power windows ?

I have the **** on the dash and I love it!! no problems. I have also heard that lever on the floor is still electronic, you just activate it by moving a shifter rather than turning a ****.

No, the floor shifter is not electronic, not even close

Doesn't feel electronic when I throw it in 4WD.

The floor shifter is directly connected to the transfer case. The only problem I could see that might be trouble is if you go off road and a rock bends the rod from the bottom of the shifter to the t case.

As long as we are talking about elec transfer case shifter, mine has a neutral position on the switch, but you can't turn it there. Is there a trick I don't know about, or did they just put a neutral position on the switch just to confuse me? High, high 4wd, and low 4wd work fine.

There is NOTHING wrong with the electronie one. There are so many electronic parts on these trucks, that if people are worried about an electronic shifter versus a manual, they have no idea how many electronic control devices are in their trucks.

I believe the electronic shift is the LEAST of the worries.

I like the clean looks of the electronic one, it gives you more space on the floor, it will actually NOT grind like the manual one does because it is computer controlled.

I've had both and like the manual floor lever much better. I use the 4 low at the local land fill once a week on average.

I have had a few problems with the manual over the years , usually wearing out the linkage and having a hard time going into 4 low but over all they fail very little . I grind less with the electronic and it just goes in easier for me and I use it a lot . What it will do 10 years down the road who knows but for now I like it . When I bought the truck I wanted the manual shift because of all the false rumors I had heard . I did a lot of searching and only found one failure on a brand new truck that never got plugged in underneath at the factory . I may be cussing it down the road but right now I would order another truck just the same way . I was told if it failed I could climb under neath and do it manually . Not something I want to find out in the mud and it would lead to the cussing but could save my but some time .
